>Do westerners HATE jrpgs?
kind of? japanese developers never really understood that their games were being perceived as an entirely separate genre from western RPGs because of their content. where were the isometric CRPGS coming out of japan in the 90s or the 'WRPGs' coming from japan now if they arent different? i know you can trace a lineage of JRPGs from shit like wizardry and stuff but you cant deny that there is a huge difference between:
>non-linear open world game where you create a voiced/silent character and you run around at your leisure, doing things and talking to people that can lead you down different story routes
>predetermined character in linear game, watching cutscenes and dialogue, until the end credits.
what makes a jrpg with no turn based combat any different than a regular action game? is it leveling up and stats? other games have that now, for some reason. is nu god of war an RPG just because you can equip kratos with different gear with numbers?
