I recommend downloading the official client rather than the steam version then. It's more consistent in terms issues, some people were being affected by a steam.dll issue and I was one of those unfortunate people. I couldn't reliably play for a month until someone on the forums finally found out a fix since the tech support couldn't find out the issue themselves. The base game and first expansion is free, so you'll have plenty of time to figure out whether you'll stick with the game or not.
