From what I understand, volcanic ash can deposit into the ground/soil itself. Meaning unless you somehow manage to remove all that ash or filter it, any life might start having problems to breathe no matter how deep you are underground. Here's a picture of roughly the amount of ash that Risuners would have to deal with.
