Design is important but what a "good" design is so relative you'd have to actually be trying to make something bad like that vulture chuuba or that skinless horse guy. A great example is how /wvt/ has always bitched about Krimbo being "ugly" and "unwatchable", and yeah he's definitely "ugly" by design (which is different than just having an ugly model) yet he's got tons of fans of his design and no problem getting and keeping viewers.

Picrel is a 6 minute doodle of a hamster they rigged with about 100 CCV. She's got a normal anime girl model and still uses this 90% of the time. Grimmi is another example of h ow "cheap" doesn't matter. It's a black haired girl in nondescript dress, extremely simple but still looks good

You aren't looking for some amazing, great model and design you're looking for something that isn't shitty . Overlay doesn't matter that shit's stupid, get one if you want but it isn't necessary. Some free asset is fine. All in all this is bad advice.
