I remember there being a funny bit in the bible where god is telling job how he could never understand his intentions, or how humans could never measure the world, or control the lightning of the clouds, or slay the leviathan but we can sort of do that nowadays, so it's funny.
Anyways, the sea serpent (or just sea creature in general) is a fairly common thing among world mythologies, so the leviathan might be the levantine take on the chaoskampf myth. It might have formed and spread as a way to explain earthquakes and flash floods, and not necessarily an actual rival or enemy.
