Without spoiling too much it is very classic fujobait "will they won't they", it definitely was not this gay in the original since you barely even spend time with him, the school vacation scene especially I know Elira's gonna freak it when she sees it. Ryoji wasn't waxing poetic about (You) and writing piano music in the original. I never played FeMC but I imagine they took some parts of her S link with him and added it.

Definitely back then they liked to tease it with the Drama CD stuff. But idk about him existing purely for fujobait. In both the original and the remake he's still a total chick-magnet.
