Oh the story wont be hard to understand without playing their games in order but they do the Nier thing where the true ending of the first game leads to the events of the second game, the true ending of the second game leads to the events of the third game (the gacha game sadly.. i dont get why they went that route for the third one) and so on.
You will have some issues with enemies and understanding character lore without playing the first one sadly though! Highly recommend playing it first, even though its the harder of the two games.
