You'd think that, but a lot of the playerbase isn't like that. For the most part there's a pretty strong self-preservation instinct by casual players who don't want to risk losing their loot. Even if that loot is trash. Then you have the very vocal section of the more regular players whose one and only goal is to be "comfy" and make friends. Broadly speaking around 80% of players on other vessels are basically avoidant NPC's or want to actively play with you in a cooperative manner. The issue is that the other 20% employ a very aggressive playstyle centered around killing all of the ships on the server until those players quit and it forces a server merge so they can start the process all over again. This is a big deal because SoT has a rather high skill ceiling despite being a simple game, and one that requires a significant time investment to get started. In most cases, it can take up to an hour to really get started in a server, and all of that can be wiped out by sinking once. That last part, in combination with the very lax communication restrictions, is why it's so easy to troll and grief in the game.
