Did you guys know that the United States was scheduled to officially adopt the metric system shortly after it was founded, and the only reason it never happened is because the European ambassador who was charged with shilling it to Congress was kidnapped by pirates on his was across the Atlantic and missed the meeting? The vote was skipped and they simply never bothered voting on it again. However, metric has periodically been informally widely adopted throughout the USA. For example, construction workers and architects frequently fuck up the maintenance and retrofitting of Depression-era buildings because they just don't realize that all the dimensions are given in metric instead of imperial! It's written on the blueprints, of course, but they often just don't even think to check!
