The evolution from "square root" charts to "nike charts" to outright "L" charts was dreadful. I really thought 10k would become a hard ceiling for vtubers and that the tally would have to be lowered to 5k

>what exactly happened for CCVID to happen
Here is a Haachama Minecraft stream to exemplify. Here are only the things people know for sure
1) Youtube does *NOT* do any verification on waiting room numbers, each person with a tab open (not necessarily active or in the foreground) counts as +1 while the stream is still a waiting room
2) When the streams moves from "waiting for X" to "watching X" Youtube does a series of checks to see if they will count the viewers for the CCV
>window is not hidden
>sound is not muted
>window is in foreground
>user is not considered a "leper" by the youtube bot
This behaviour started in December 2020 and is market at the charts posted in this thread as "2020 algo change", before that the waiting room number transferred directly to the initial viewership numbers and increased from there
That last part, the "leper" one, is important, Youtube disclosed that they check the viewers to ensure they are not "spam viewers" and said "spam viewers" won't count as a view no matter what.

Enter CCVID: clearly they were jiggling with their "is this user a leper?" algorithm and it went FUCKING HAYWIRE! With each stream that passed more and more of the users that were watching vtubers
>not only Hololive, as the main confirmation even came from Hal and Selen
were being marked as "lepers", leading to charts like
>pic related
That was only one of the changes tho, there was a second one that affected how high a stream's peak could reach
>a sort of "artificial ceiling"
but that's not as well confirmed and documented as the one above
