My great personal advice that's independent of what's going on here and is something I've been keeping in mind for a while now is that it's okay to step away from people you think are holding you back if you're trying to make something out of yourself. It might seem cruel sometimes but sometimes hanging around the wrong kind of people can reinforce certain mentalities that are keeping you in the mud instead of allowing you to flap your wings.

Would you rather be friends with people who have an optimistic view of life and promotes self-improvement or do you want to stick around people who make you comfortable but never do anything or inspire you to help yourself in other aspects of life but then fail to help you the moment something goes wrong with you because they're also inexperienced and in the mud just like you.
