In the first book written by Tolkien, the Hobbit, Bilbo (seen here turning 111 in part one of Lord of the Rings) obtains the ring through fate in his adventure. He decides to gift it to his nephew, Frodo, and in part because he holds on to it for 40 years with no temptation and because of its terrible corrupting power it is decided that he will be the bearer of the ring in the quest to destroy it. Alsoooo genuine spoilers After Gandalf dies to the balrog in part 1 and the party splits when orcs ambush them it's just Frodo, Sam, and then Gollum for weeks as they journey alone so he has no other option at that point
