We genuinely don't know, and research into it was suspended. What is known that several gay actors actually got their start in acting by consciously training themselves not to act gay. The actor in the crime thriller show White Collar for example is one of the gayest men to ever walk to earth, and consciously reworking his mannerisms to not be effete laid the groundwork for his career later in life.
A funny part of the story is that in the show he is paired up with a straight actress portraying a hard lesbian woman who he occasionally has to hit on in order to infiltrate crime circles.
