If you have to be taken anywhere in an ambulance without insurance you might as well jump out on the highway and try and kill yourself. 18k for a trip to the hospital is not a joke and they will try their best to collect. I've seen people with bones sticking out of their arms refuse an ambulance for this reason alone. And there are constantly stories of people who have been shot trying to walk to the hospital instead of taking an ambulance. Part of the reason it's so expensive is that a huge portion of medical treatment is emergency room visits by the ultra poor who don't care they're in even more debt. So the hospitals all lose money hand over fist because no insurance and no money to take from debt collection. They started charging 150 dollars for an Advil if you don't have insurance to try to make up the difference. That and also these private companies are all the greediest shitbags trying to exploit people who can't even refuse treatment. They lobby so much none of the Dems or repubs will ever do anything to actually help their constituents.
