Probably the most important thing to realize is that being a wageslave makes you want to kill yourself but once you start earning money and have a significant chunk saved (significantly greater than the sub-500 dollars the average am*rican has) in your 401k then not working brings you even greater pain and feelings of wanting to kill yourself than working does. Working at least dulls the pain too, since when you're working you're thinking about finishing the work and going home to do whatever you want. But when you're unemployed after working you just have infinite time to think about how your savings are being chipped away at over time by not working, which is a worse feeling than simply working.

It's a different bag than "being a neet without ever working" since starting at 0 you have no expectations about anything.
