I saw a couple people saying that in this thread, so you're definitely not alone. I'm not sure if he's actually putting more effort into interacting with chat or if it's just the stars aligning, though - it really helps that this is a game he's familiar enough with that it doesn't take his full attention and that it attracted people knowledgeable enough about the game to actually say interesting things. Might help too that people have toned down the spam a bit, so it's easier to pick out messages worth responding to.
I'd like to see him play more games he's played before for that reason, actually. Blind playthroughs are fun and all, but I've also really enjoyed it when he treats the stream more like a teaching experience and explains game mechanics or interesting trivia instead.
