It's a hell of a thing. These people, though not all, could generally be described as the rejects of society. Not necessarily per their own fault, but the description usually fits them well. All these people be they broken, lonely or just in need of comfort during bad times, found that comfort within some girl behind an avatar on the other side of the world. They finally found someone that could help them be a better person. Losing that, it just seems like such a massive blow to your character. Seeing people drowning themselves in booze during Coco's graduation anniversary says it all. It's heartbreak, no other way to put it. Sure, normal people would call them parasocial losers for feeling that way, but honestly, as someone who is in no position to judge, I feel for them.
