This is Australia's population density, the rest is desert. If the geography alone wasn't bad enough, the NBN (National Broadband Network) was a joke because they spent a shit ton of money for a program that reused 100yo copper wiring instead of installing optic fiber.
It goes on and on but basically politics and lobbyists, kinda the same reason for why US invests billions on adding new lanes on roads but refuse to build intercity train system that would cost way less.
