You hold Selen’s cheek with your free hand as she snuggles further into touch of your palm. Both her hands held your own in place against her cheek, as if she was unwilling to part from your warmth. Her eyes, although closed for now, silently spoke to you how much comfort she was in, and internally you thought to yourself, how in the world did you make this dragon girl fall in love with you?

You knew Tatsuki Selen from your early days of childhood. Her family was quite enigmatic, considering that her father had courted two different dragons, thus was born two different half dragon girls, one being Elira, the Solar Sky Dragon, and the other Selen, the Lunar Sky Dragon.

You befriended the two of them together, being neighbours and all. While Elira was more laid-back and lackadaisical, Selen always felt like she had to prove something. Constantly trying to one-up both her sister and you in whatever you do, be it in video games, studies, and sports. Especially sports. She would run, jump and bound ahead of you whenever you were headed to school. And you didn’t shy away from her challenges. Footraces to school, track and field stuff, and the more often than not prank in which you would chase her halfway across the campus. Of course, you could never forget her laughter. Her loud, almost unending laughter that annoyed you to no end as she teased and goaded you without mercy.

This rivalry of yours climaxed when you brought over your newly bought Lego Bionicle toys. You had bought the latest in the Toa Metru series, buying both Vakama and Nokama so that the two of you could play together. Looking back, it was probably no surprise when you barged into her room and saw her playing house with her Sanrio plushies, namely Cinamoroll and Kuromi. You learnt that at the end of the day, Selen was a girl, and with a beet red face, slammed the door on you.

Luckily, you weren’t some loser kid back then. You collected yourself and knocked on her door again, asking if you could join her with your Bionicle toys. You remembered the look on her face, how her azure and amethyst eyes shone with happiness and surprise, a huge smile on her face, yet the pink on her cheeks never left as you joined her tea party with your out of place Lego Technic toys. Elira even laughed at the two of you playing together, but you didn’t mind. You were just happy to be able to spend time with Selen, your best friend.

Fast forward some years, you had moved out of that neighbourhood, forgot about the two dragon girls, and ended up in some college halfway across the country. Your jaw hung from your face for the better part of the day when you saw Selen at orientation. She looked like she had barely changed, wearing clothes that were baggy and hid her figure, yet she still sported that beaming smile of hers and her laughter. Oh, her laughter. It was something you thought you had forgotten, yet hearing it once more brought back memories so warm and nostalgic.

The two of you struck a friendship that was like no other, riding on the memories you had spent as kids. She was still big on sports, even doing some dragon racing competitively, whereas you had more or less dropped out of any sort of physical activity. She teased you endlessly for it, but you didn’t mind. You were just happy to have your best friend once more, and hear her laughing like the good old times.

Then one day, you once again caught her doing something most would consider girly, seeing her cook and make bento box meals. It was exactly like all those years ago, beet red face, head wings covering her eyes and plenty of abashed arm waving. She even tried to hit you against the chest, but you pulled her into a hug instead. To your own surprise, her body had indeed become more womanly, despite the many layers of clothing she wore, but you push away the thoughts and tell her that you had always known she had a girly side, and you liked her for it. She blushed even harder, and you were a dumbass for not realizing the impact of the what you had said that day.

And today, here you were. You had dropped by her place because she invited you for a taste testing of her latest bento boxes, which you already knew were going to be delicious. Yet when you arrived, she was acting uncharacteristically shy, being even girlier than what you’re used to, wearing a frilly apron and shaping her bentos in the likeness of her favourite Sanrio mascots.

“What’s with the attitude adjustment?” You ask her jokingly. Selen huffed as if genuinely incensed, which made you raise an eyebrow.

“Why? Can’t you just appreciate me trying to be a bit nicer than usual?” She huffed, raising her nose high as she turned away from you.

“Nicer than usual? Selen, you’re a demon spawn, who’s sole purpose on this Earth is to forever annoy me with your grating laughter,” you snorted. This time, Selen gave you a harsh look, silencing whatever joke you had intended to spout next.
