Half of the levels in RR (and a bit less than half in RA) are boring with flat layout and "go from house to house" progression.

The other half have great layouts, great themes, and are often full of Build porn and awesome tricks.

For some reasons the game starts with a boring one, and even the demo was based on that.

If you want slopes, check out the mine level.

There are plenty of hacks which make MM games better. Lag reduction patches, bug fixes, etc

For MM3, there is "Improvement" which gets rid of all lag, fixes a lot of glitches, and also has some other additions/changes which you may or may not like
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/992/

For Rockman 4 (doesn't work with MM4), lag reduction patch, there are two patches, one "standard" lag reduction, and another one which also changes other things like being able to switch weapons on the fly (but also gets rid of the autoscroll sections...)
http://www.geocities.jp/borokobo/zip/Rock4Optimization_v3.zip

For Rockman 5, but these ones also works with MM5. Lag reduction patch:
http://www.himaq5.xyz/rock5easily/archive/rock5_lite.zip
Lets you switch weapons on the fly (select, down+select, select+start):
http://www.himaq5.xyz/rock5easily/archive/rock5_weaponselect.zip

Rockman 6 (does not work with MM6):
Lag reduction patch but also speeds up the process of many things, like loading times, scrolling when entering a room, etc:
http://www.geocities.jp/borokobo/zip/Rock6Optimization101.zip
Fixed sliding. In the original MM6, and unlike other MM games, you couldn't jump during a slide, plus there is a small delay, wait time, at the end of a slide. This fixes both:
http://www.geocities.jp/borokobo/zip/Rock6FixSlide2.zip
With both patches applied, RM6 becomes 100% more fun.

Mega Man X3: fully playable Zero, but also makes the game better if you play as X, by getting rid of the delay when firing several charge shots, and by making level progression less linear (you can use a battle armor as soon as you have the tanks for it, and Zero can charge subweapons even without the upgrade, thus letting you open up levels in a less linear way):

yep, you're only stuck with the shitty ones. Survival horror as a genre only picked up in quality starting the ps2 ownards. Most "retro" ones by this board's standards range from shit to decent, excluding the few golden ones we all know that.

Someone hoping he's going find some retro survival horror as good as RE/SH/Echo Night is soon going to be drowning in shit.

Now - one COULD argue survival horror is "not a real video game genre" like you said, but not for the reasons you stated. Only because video game genres are defined by gameplay mechanics and SH brings in the notion of theme (horror) into the mix.

Now though, genres are made to easily classify and identify things, so if it helps, it might as well be there, and considering nowadays the consensus is to call anything a genre (and fuck gameplay mechanics), I mean just look at the genre list on Steam, survival horror isn't worst than "indie" and whatever the fuck that indicates on the kind of game you're going to be playing.

You're not thinking hard enough. Especially with your point&click comparison

Survival Horror is a sub genre of action-adventure

Look up at the VG genre trees, and at the top you'll see the action and adventure genre

Then, there is the action-adventure sub genre
and then, there is a sub genre of that called survival horror.

It's pretty simple: take out the action mechanics (twitch based controls) ? Then it becomes an adventure game with a horror theme. Take out the adventure mechanics? It becomes Doom or House of The Dead. Take out the horror, and it's just an action-adventure game.

That's right, contrary to popular survival horror ARE "action"games by definition.

Now some survival horror lean more towards action (the AitD/RE kind) and some more towards adventure (Echo Night etc), but there is always at least a bit of the other side in the mix.

tl;dr survival horror = action-adventure game with a horror theme, and survival gameplay mechanics.
Action=twitch based controls
adventure = puzzles, figuring out where to go etc
survival gameplay mechanics: item management, making the player FEEL weaker than the odds he's facing
Horror = proeminent horror theme throughout the game (not just "bits and pieces of gore" like Dino Crisis 2) that are meant to horrify the player (scare, gross out, feel uneasy, etc)

It's the best of the trilogy.

Each enemy encounter is a like a small challenge that you have to overcome, with a lot of variety.

This makes the game exciting and compelling all the way through.

Compare this to X1 or 2, in which you can just run through carelessly unleashing charge shots on your way unchallenged... there is less fun in that. X3 has much better enemy design and level design.

Yes it's flawed. The way the power ups are scattered. Quite a few bosses can be beaten using the same tactic. Zero. But it's still the best because the chore elements, the ones you deal with 95% of the time, are better designed.

There is nothing awesome about random and or forced environmental dmg. There is also nothing "challenging" about it, it's just purely random, unavoidable free dmg because they thought the lightning looked cool.

Texturing and the texture themselves could have been better, even for a tanker. It's just grey and puke colours everywhere. Even Critical Mass brings a lot of different colours.
Also, what's up with the invislbe water.

The layout is amazing but I stand on architecture being basic, it's very square for the most part.

by "true 3D" I mean full 3D with environments, unlike the pre-rendered backgrounds of AitD and RE.

The impressive thing about this game is that it was being developped at the same time as Resident Evil; so all the similiraties between both games comes from the Alone In The Dark influence and the time period the games were made in.

By comparing the 2 you really realize everything Resident Evil brought on the table, while Overblood sticked closed to AitD, like having the shitty melee combat.

What's amazing is how similar the story is: scientists experiment gone wrong --> zombies.

However Overblood at least brings true 3D on the table, afaik it was the first survival horror in true 3D, and being given the choice to switch between 3 different type of camera angles was pretty novel too.

Despite all its flaws, the game is fast and can be satisfying solely because it follows the rules and tropes of the 3 big Build FPS games, and at least half of the levels are really good.

RE3 is simply the best Resident Evil. The one with the most replay value and the highest skill ceiling. It's a fantastic survival horror, and behind that, a great action game.

People who say it's a "cheap" sequel are the kinds of people who play a game maybe once and only look at the surface. They say it's like "RE2.5", but in reality 3 is more unique than 2, while 2 is but a cheap copy pasting of everything RE1 did while managing to fuck up the scenario system in the process.

>>5175627
all survival horror are action games. it's part of their definition. action-adventure with a horror theme. With no action they'd be adventure-horror games like Uninvented on NES.

>that map start with low ammo
>random lightning dmg and turrets shooting at me up the ass while waiting for the crane to come down and up forever
>99% ugly ass textures everywhere and basic architecture
>a thousand doors with autoclose and the most loud and obnoxious door sound the game has
>that part with toxic waste, you're guaranteed to take some dmg unless you know the map by heart, especially if you wanna do 100% and kill the Octobrains in there
>really bad mini Battlelord fight at the end

It has a great concept, layout and sense of 3D, but fails on so many other levels.

This game ranges from bland as fuck to outright bad.

I have no idea what's the big deal about it. There are much better "2.5D" FPS released in the same timespan that got shit on for the very fact they're not "full 3D" while this bland as fuck game got praised hell and back.

Lucasarts must have sucked a lot of reviewers' dick I'm telling you.

The double-tap running in the reverse castle singlehandely make the game 100% more fun, and that's without mentionning all the other extra content, new areas, new musics, new enemies, new gear including new weapons with new special moves, etc
