Oh and that is one of the reasons the game CAN get very easy very fast. Once you can find and beat one of the easier maps, you can have a whole frontline team with magic spears. Yes, it's optional. But if the battles gets so boring, I might as well abuse that and breeze through them just to see if it gets any better... it didn't.

AF was suppose to be UW3, but it plays quite different and the spells kind of suck compared to the original UWs.

The fly spell doesn't even let you fly, you just float and then you have to find some point of elevation, then "run" across the air to another spot you want to go to. The jumping "puzzle" in Level 8 was also worse than all the jumping you had to do for UW1.

I've only ever seriously played Blades of Exile. Found the "puzzles" contrived though. And early game combat is tough. You really need a perfectly balanced team to survive. I also have the Geneforge series on GOG, but never got about playing them.
