People don't like feeling like screen real estate is being wasted. Why do you think people generally full screen games and use widescreen patches?

You sure you're not thinking of the FPGBC? The FPGA GBC that you make yourself?

>when it doesn't take 2 minutes to turn on
Get the latest beta, it's 20-30 seconds at most, less depending on how many games you have on it.
>and doesnt drain the battery like crazy
I got roughly three or four hours on Megaman Legends from full.
>has a better on off function
You literally tap the power button and it suspends it, then tap it again after the power icon is off and it boots up in like four seconds.

Supposedly KNULLI is going to improve this even more but right now that thing's in a messy state.

It has Batocera and Batocera itself is getting a new update whenever KNULLI gets out of its early alpha/beta.

Get the H variant and maybe a grip like
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6569359
I find that if I play anything that wants the analogs on the thing I get cramps but otherwise it's great.

Why not just get the ITA screens that look better instead? You're going for a modded system anyway.

Ran out of room, but I should add I also have the speaker issue even at 1.08. Even if you have the thing at the lowest volume you will hear noise coming out of the speaker. Sometimes it stops, sometimes it doesn't. It's almost imperceivable unless the room is completely dead silent or you have the speakers up to your ears and I've never heard it at all when other noise is happening in any way.

I also don't know if it's the buttons I got or I'm remembering my years of growing up with the GBC wrong, but diagonals, especially down-right and up-right seem to get noticed way more than down-left and up-left. Left is properly rigid while right is ever so slightly dipped. Maybe the silicone contacts aren't on as great?

I bought the kit two weeksish ago and assembled it earlier in the week. Got the v1.11 variant of the board. The worst part of assembling the kit is simply having to thread the screws on the shell itself because they don't come prethreaded. Honestly took me like 20 minutes of just screwing them in as hard as I could and then backing them out and the middle-right screw is acting up on me by being firm but not coming out now.
>I just don't know what the user experience is actually like when it comes to playing games on it.
When turning it on it functions exactly like any other legit GBC. With the newer firmwares they made their own OC boot logo so you need to get the modified one from
https://github.com/makhowastaken/GWGBC_FW/tree/main/HWv1_1
The volume slider is now this rocker thing you can push in to get to the OSD menu. It is much MUCH worse for turning sound down and you can't get it as low as the original GBC at all. It's always at like middle level on a real GBC even if you're one tick away from being mute.
If you play a GB or GBC game on the GBC core the graphics sometimes break. This is not handled automatically by the FPGBC yourself and you need to open up the OSD to tick "GBC fix" which fixes it. I think they said they're working to make this automatic.
The CPU speed is ever so slightly higher than a real GBC when you get it in the sweet spot which is like 3-4 ticks lower than max (It defaults to this on 1.08). I believe they're also working to fix this.
Real cartridges all seem to work based on the ones I own with no issues at all outside of the GBC fix thing.

Flashcarts are a mess in terms of compatibility.
Everdrives are officially supported now and work like they do on a real GBC. This should mean the clones on AliExpress (The Game Boy GB Pro+/Game Color ones) work as well.
EZ Flash JR requires the 1.5e patch (You need to Google it) and like 70% of games don't work. Some work by setting the CPU speed lower but crash when you put them back.

Most of the hurdle is just getting out of China. I just had my recent AliExpress order take roughly around a week and a half and that was with every single item being from a different vendor, and my FPGBC kit took a week to get out of China but two days to get to me once it landed in the US.

I bought the RG35XX-H a couple weeks back and it arrived in roughly two weeks. A couple of those days were it sitting at a USPS distribution center that has been ass the past few months and holding onto my packages for sometimes a week or more so it's not even their fault.

I have one. I got this in addition to that for the cart functionality because redoing my original GBC would be a full Ship of Thesius deal and I don't like that.

I was a couple months ago until the tax and shipping drove it up to $300. Then I saw this thing and it was the perfect price ($60 + a $10 case + $1 buttons) for exactly what I wanted (A modern GBC replacement without modding an original). At this point it would still be cheaper to buy an Everdrive X7 after the $20 I spent on the Jr.

>Finally get an FPGBC kit and EZ Flash Jr. in.
>Spend the afternoon setting everything up.
>Giddy and enjoying messing with my normal carts on it, everything works great outside of the GBC Fix needing to be toggled occasionally rather than it doing it automatically.
>Try out the Jr. after grabbing a MicroSD card.
>Patch the Jr. to 1.05e via my real GBC and everything.
>Only Pokemon seems to really work reliably using it on the FPGBC so that kind of works for Crystal since it's a cheap way to have RTC.
>Most games just hang on a white screen with a rare one or two actually being playable.
I'm actually going to have to buy an Everdrive x7 and shell out that $120, aren't I?

Alright, for anyone wondering I sort of figured it out.
Notifications as a whole can't be disabled, but disabling certain parts of it can. It seems like Batocera defaults to always forcing notifications on but if you go into the submenus of the notifications you can disable and change stuff like the screenshot notifications and flashes, save the config, and it will persist across seemingly all systems. GPU screenshot turned off will mean it always only takes screenshots at native resolution regardless of what it, or you, have it set to. So for example it can upscale a GBA game 720x480 and then make it fit your 4:3 screen with the black bars and everything, but if you take a screenshot it will always be 240x160. On MML for example I'm playing it at what looks like 640x480 4:3 but the screenshots I take are native 320x240 4:3.

The only issue I have now that I can't figure out is why some screenshots cause corrupting issues like this. It's like 1/30 screenshots will look like this.

I just thought someone might know offhand, but you're right. The answer is "Yes". At least this option gets saved if you save the custom configuration. I have no idea how to deal with the notification issue though since it just keeps coming back.

Black bars are fine. I'm just wondering if I can take screenshots without it scaling the screenshot up as well. I assume that's "GPU Screenshot" or is that just for shaders? On mGBA on PC it takes them at native even if I have them scaled up.

So does anyone know how to disable notifications permanently via Batocera? I got my RG35XX-H yesterday and the fact that it has a notification for multiple seconds every time I take a screenshot is driving me nuts. Disabling it via the Retroarch menu only does it for the current session even if I save the configuration. Putting
>global.retroarch.video_font_enable=false
into retroarchcustom.cfg does nothing. I'm at a loss here.

I also have no idea how to get the native resolution/aspect ratio of a system forced for the RG35XX-H. If I do integer scaling it does it but isn't that still stretched or am I misunderstanding? I never really understood exactly what is fine in terms of scaling without it stretching. I didn't even notice I was stretching Fatal Frame 1 when I was playing it a year or two back until someone pointed it out.

Thanks. Yeah, ever since I posted that I was looking at various websites for recommendations and I ran into more or less the same conclusions you did, but the issue is that none of these people seem to have OG color schemes, they mainly deal in transparent ones or unofficial colors when I basically just want the same colors as what I currently have. The only ones I've found are the JCD guys on AliExpress and from Googling around they're like third closest to OEM quality. FunnyPlaying and Extreme Rate are apparently the closest to OEM quality with JCD following after but the latter two don't have the OG color schemes or ones that are slightly off. You also don't want to opt for any transparent shells from what I was Googling because they're prone to cracking and since they're not as thick compared to solid shells they feel like cheaper plastic than OEM.

Their stuff was on sale for like a week or so which is why that happened.

>> No.10808337 [View]

So now that I've jumped down this rabbit hole, I've grabbed a FPGBC kit for physical carts without having to mod a real GBC and I took a look at all my old Gameboys and DSes realizing just how messed up they are in terms of the shell and I was wondering what the way to restoring them would be in terms of shells, screen, etc so that it's like it originally was, no mods.

My Pocket and Color have seen far better days since the screens and the shells have gouges and scratches in them. Are there any shells close to OEM quality or is Nintendium still out of reach? I assume the screen is under the actual plastic cover, right? So another plastic cover would be the only thing I would need to get that sorted out?
My GBA looks like it's been thrown across a football field with how much I dropped it when I was younger and I lost the battery cover like 20 years ago. Do we have anything close to OEM quality or is Nintendium also out of reach? Like with the GBP/GBC, do I have to replace the entire screen or just the thing that goes over it?
Is SP shell replacement still a complete Chinesium crapshoot or have they gotten better? Mine's still fine, just need to replace the charging port, but if I ever need to I assume it's still bad, right?
DS Phat, how's the situation on that? Do the hinges break on the aftermarket stuff or is it still just as bad as the original? Also, I assume rehousing is going to be an absolute chore, isn't it?
DS Lite, same deal. On my original the entire top-right corner covering the power light just snapped off as I was holding it when I was younger so I need a replacement shell. I've done a replacement for a relative (and slightly overtightened the screws causing an imprint in the plastic while also making it so the screen wasn't perfectly seated or something so if you pushed on it it went completely white) but the shell I got like 15 years ago now felt noticeably less quality than the original. Is this still the case?

Is OEM quality just impossible?

>and maybe it could be fixed by a grip too but I'm not sure it's worth the investment
I don't know where you live but if you're in the US it's very likely your local library has a 3D printer and it's dirt cheap to print stuff in my experience, at least in my local area. You can find files for a grip just by Googling "R36S grip 3D print" and I doubt it'll cost more than $5 or so in resin from your library to make one. At worst you're out $5. Printing shops nowadays also tend to have a 3D printer they'll let you use. As long as you're not selling the things on Etsy no one cares.
