now that you mention it, I also had a barber shop i used to go to as a kid around the same age, and they had a PS1 as well. it was modded though, and all their games were burned copies. I used to play spyro and resident evil 3. good stuff!

my dentist had a kids room in the lobby that had an NES. I have fond memories of playing Super Mario 3 while waiting. this was in 1999 or 2000. fun stuff. I had an NES at home, so, it's not like I had any magical experience playing any game I had never played before and could ONLY play at the dentist, but it was fun. Mario 3 was one of my favorites growing up, so, i was cool with it.

Right. and if you choose to use savestates, then that's your decision. that's TOTALLY cool. I'm really happy that you like using save states. personally, I don't like "slap on the wrist and try it again" handicaps.
