>Its the same thing that happened with Evangelion where Christian imagery was ripped off because it looked cool but didn't really mean anything.
Although I agree with you, the way the game utilized elements from these random religious sources was in and of itself very close to the idea of gnosticism.

Episodes 1-4 and 6 were a thing (Xenogears was episode 5). Xenosaga was an attempt to do it over again but the three games only covered (the reimagined version of) episode 1.

And, uh, I guess I didn't really answer your question.

It gets better around the time you start to get a full party. As you get more moves, it gets more flashy and fun, but the combat is never going to be terribly complex.

I think the combat is average for an RPG the first couple times you play the game and deteriorates as quickly as you learn all the nuances.

Like, building up to attack level 3 can be fun, but there's almost no reason why you would really want to do this 9 out of 10 fights. 3 normal attacks, 1 level 3 combo < 2 normal attacks, 2 level 1 combos. Deathblows can also be power-leveled when you figure out what goes in to learning them.

...and before the "unfinished game" comments roll in:

Generally, when media is produced, the people making it don't only make the resources they need to make the very next part of the game. When an author writes a book, it's likely that they're going in order, but a video game needs many different people who work on different aspects of the project. Character models, BGM, backdrops and 3D environments, etc. and to have them all come in on a given day and work on only the resources for a single part of a game would be silly.

Fighting the last boss in Ys 1 is like fighting one of those logos that pinballs around a TV screen saver.

My theory is that the aesthetics of Chrono Cross's first half are what really turned people off. If you play it after trigger, the tropical setting is a real shock, and Yasunori Mitsuda can't create decent battle music to save his life, despite the amazing quality of the rest of his work. So the first things you see when you play the game are a mess of flash-forwards, pink dogs and wacky audio/visual. But if you stick with it up through Termina, it's a great game.

Thanks. I dunno what it is about these games that brings out some sort of giddiness in me.

>>2167420
I've probably played some of them, along with the Korean ones. They aren't very good, no, and when you find a decent one it always has some fatal flaw like you find out there was really no way to ever lose. But I keep downloading them, somehow.

For some reason, I occasionally get the urge to play video games that use cards as the main vehicle for gameplay. It can be:

1. Games that are actual representations of card games
2. Games that are of a different genre (action usually) but still have cards functioning as equipment or abilities

This is the only one I remember that qualifies as retro. It was actually a really solid game and felt better balanced than real Pokemon, plus it didn't take nearly as much time and money as the real Pokemon CCG.

I just replayed FFIV. Among other things, I decided to rename Yang "Dook" and this significantly increased my enjoyment.

Back in 2000, all I can remember was Corvette walls. Maybe it had something to do with the community/clan I played with. I barely remember anything else from the game, but as I recall, it's not like there were tons of rooms and servers, so I figured this wasn't something that was contained.

"Amazing" doesn't have a positive or negative connotation. For example, I could say "I'm amazed at how obtuse people can be sometimes".

I didn't say it was praise-worthy.

We don't really know what he meant by "failures" anyway. I guess I was sort of just trying to further his point about "omissions" by pointing out that a modern XG would omit a lot of the flavor of the original, just because there are things that aren't done today that were OK back with sprites and low-res backgrounds.

The amazing thing about Chu-Chu is that if you read Perfect Works, there are actually explanations for all her shit.

>snuck into Bledavik disguised as a stuffed animal to find a man for herself
>Limiters placed on her race disabled their growing ability so when the party has their limiters removed in Shevat that's why she can finally grow again

He has a point. Part of the thing with old games is that they did a lot of things that wouldn't translate well to the voice-acted, hi-res era. For instance, it'd look ridiculous fighting Dan in the tournament in HD. With little sprite graphics, you can sort of excuse a little boy being involved in a fighting tournament, but it'd look ridiculous with today's technology.

Yeah, this is the real reason. The only hope the series would possibly have is if fans filled the holes.

>which character looks cooler/better?
>which character's play style/personality/attributes most fit the way I play games?
>whose snippet of backstory sounds more interesting?

This isn't the sort of thing that's supposed to spark an identity crisis. Do you think those nutjob Christians were right when they said violent video games would turn you violent? If not, why would you be afraid to play as a girl?
