The problem with gameplay mods that "modernize" Doom is that they operate under the impression that Doom's default mechanics somehow don't work in modern day, and that everything needs to be reinvented. This is, I think, the big problem with Mark's "the Archvile behavior was clearly a bug" take on Doom.

You don't need to do much to modernize it. Smoother animations, high-quality sounds, more visual feedback with prettier effects.
Maybe a touch of balance adjustment so the SSG doesn't blow every single other goddamn weapon out of the water.

I'd second Unloved.
Plays spooky n' shit with the atmosphere but still retains core doom gameplay.

Cold as hell is another one, I didn't like it but I can appreciate the effort that went into it. It's closer to being like survival horror in a way, you also have to try and avoid monsters if you can. Plus it's god audio logs and all that cool stuff.

Ghouls forest I have never played but I hear it's spooky as well.

There are probably other wads that others can recommend. There was this one wad called like...."chogorsh" or "cheogorsh" or some shit like that. I cant remember, it was weird. Played it to the end years ago but it had a bit of an off vibe to it, well made at least (but you would get lost at times). I think it was made by an eastern european guy.

If anybody can jog my memory on the last one...
