/vr/ - Retro Games

Fatal Fury 2/Special are classics. In fact, I like them better than FF3.
Real Bout Special might be the best one though, but I have a soft spot for FFS.
I also wish KOF wouldn't have overtaken over FF. KOF is a versus game and not really a Fatal Fury game, although there are similar mechanics and most of the FF characters (except based ones like Yamada), and Garou also isn't a real Fatal Fury game since it's lacking the multi-plane mechanic.

What a coincidence, May is also the best character in the Fatal Fury series.

3 planes is too overdone, having 2 planes like in the classic FF games is the way to go.

which ones would you recommend?

I already played Astal, thought it was beautiful but not exactly top notch. And I can't think of much else.
Games like Taromaru, Silouhette Mirage or Shinobi X maybe, but those aren't pure platformers and are still in a minority within the Saturn catalogue.
Saturn is really for fighting games, shmups and Sega's 1st party output, and RPGs if you read japanese.

FF 2/Special and the Real Bout series are among my favorite fighting games ever. Everyone suck Garou MotW's cock, and it is a good game, but outside of graphics it's not really all that special, FF/Real Bout series had the trademark bi-plane mechanic that made it stand out from other fighting games.
