Clearly it differs from game to game. Quake, for example, looks better in "Chunky Mode" because Adrian Carmack is first and foremost a pixel artist. I mean just look at Doom! No one in their right mind would ever say Doom looks good filtered. And again like what >>6385678 said the lack of colors made the filtered textures look like shit anyway. Not to mention the software rendering, which was what the game was originally developed with, lacked filtering. They only put filtering in for glquake later.

However, other games didn't think of textures as sprites or pixel art from the 2D era and designed them to be filtered, like in >>6387296. Again it depends on what the artists intended for each game.

But whatever I guess it's more fun to join a team and argue.

Why don't "retro gamers" understand that the way to get a younger audience to care about arena FPS is to stop talking about singleplayer and babbling about "muh good old days" instead of showing people resources and pointing them in the direction to start playing with other people? If you played them as much as you talked about them there wouldn't be an issue.

I'm pretty young. Never really cared about arena FPS. I legitimately could not give a single fuck about playing doom mods and arcane dimensions and hearing some 30 year old retard babble about how he was just like cooller 'back in the day' running around at 320ups and having 15% lg accuracy. But when someone showed me a vid of cpma or quakeworld and all the crazy movement and map control or something I was interested and started playing these games. Young people generally care more about multiplayer games, they don't want to get pointed to a bunch of singleplayer mods and 500 sourceports or hear some nostalgic moron rambling about his childhood memories.

The fighting game community has been growing as a niche 1v1 genre for a while even though the barrier to entry is even more difficult. Arena FPS could be that, but arena "players" would rather LARP and never point any people interested in the right direction. It's pretty sad.

Update, this really came as no surprise cus all I did was change the CFG file, but I changed the values for the pistol and shotgun from 8-5 to 999 each. I loaded up surface tension, and suddenly the soldiers went down the instant I shot them as well as the infamous helicopter over the dam.

I really think I'm on to something here, I'm thinking of doing an actual change in the values for all the weapons at some point and uploading the CFG for all to play. Any suggestions for damage values?

Just checked it out after not playing the PTS in a while and I gotta say, Anarki and Sorlag (along with everyone else) feel so much better to control somehow. Also, Strogg has Q4-style crouchsliding now which is neat, although compared to Slash's it feels a little off somehow. Probably cus I haven't played Quake 4 in a while.

I really liked your map anon. It kinda reminds me of Metal Gear Solid sneaking around prison cells. Fucking brutal number of enemies at the start though. I died like 30 times at least.

The only way I can really beat it is to make a beeline straight for the grenade launcher. Stray grenades take half the monsters out this way.

I also love when people put broken stuff in their maps. It's the little details that count. Like the secret room with the broken front door and the collapsed rubble and broken light. Nice detail. Also its not too common you have the eldritch monsters in a sci-fi themed map. I liked that. I don't see why it's not more common when you see the soldiers in the monster maps even in the ID Quake campaign. So they obviously work together.

I know the fish are bugged and add +1 enemy count but does the crucified mummy count as an enemy too? Cus I could only kill 48/53.

All in all really nice map. Make sure to forward it to that map anon.

final release next thread, I posted this on the func mapping discord and the quack wizards seemed to like it, so I got the idea to also add a litle bit at the end to encourage the viewer to try Trenchbroom, who knows, maybe one or two may swallow the bait and hopefully they will work on something cool
