>you can be a good speedrunner and a shitty player, and vice versa
yes but that's only at the extreme of either end. most of it is overlap and speedrunners are better than the vast majority of players at their game simply from understanding how to move the character optimally.

>N64 was incapable of hosting any complex games
Super Mario 64 is infinitely more complex than FF7. FF7 doesn't even have gameplay, it's literally just navigating menus.

How is thoroughly understanding the depth and nuances in moving your character not getting good at the game?

>This game has low replay value
It has more replay value than literally any other Mario game because your freedom in movement directly scales with your movement skill, which improves upon consecutive playthroughs. It's the perfect parkour sandbox; the possibilities are endless.

Imagine missing the point this hard. Why would having lots of enemies even matter in a game like this?

word.

sm64 is for people who like tight, varied movement mechanics with a great sense of weight and momentum and jungle gym courses for you to play around in endlessly.

smg is for people who like being dazzled by bullshit.

>"difficulty" is just figuring out where everything is.
Difficulty is creating a challenge for yourself instead of brainlessly doing exactly what is expected of you.

Going by your own definition of challenge, Super Mario 64 has significantly more of it than SMW

>Game plays just fine with the D-pad.
The d-pad is terrible, but that's not the only thing that sucks about the controls. They watered down the physics, speed, and movement mechanics laughably.

Feels like you're swimming through molassas in comparison to the original.

>taking away the skill based platforming and time limits
This is only true if you are a braindead zombie who limits themselves to the obvious without ever experimenting with gameplay.

You can make SM64 take as much skill or as little time as you want it to.

That's the beauty of it. The game doesn't pidgeonhole you into playing in any specific way, and it has a mountain of depth to play with.

There are more good 2d platformers than good 3d platformers, but the best 3d platformers have better gameplay than the best 2d platformers.

that's just because you're bad at the game. the controller is great for SM64 and the joystick is perfectly precise.

Super Mario 64 has the best platforming mechanics of all time.

The stages are designed to work organically with your moveset so that your freedom scales directly with your skill at the game.

You can complete objectives in millions of different ways, and the skill ceiling is pretty much endless, so the replay value never stops.
