Finally got around to playing Popful Mail (my 2nd Sega CD game after Snatcher). This is also the 'un-working design patched version' that was recomended by many.
Took me about 10hours to complete.

Game also seems fairly unique for the era (especially with the voice acting and cutscenes)

Overall I liked the game a lot, but it's quite easy. Even the last boss gave not much of a challenge.
Early game was much harder as you don't have your buddies yet and no ranged attack.
Without having played the US difficulty I can understand why it was ramped up.

Maybe controversional but I enjoyed the translation and English voice acting, lot's of nonsense and fits the game well, e.g Arnold:

Should've played the unpatched version. Un-Worked Designs patches are just casualization with a fancy name.

The patches don't address the main issue people have with Working Designs: the translations. And OP said the patch made Popful Mail too easy.

They address equally important issues like fucking with the difficulty and breaking the game (i.e. Exile II). I wish they were retranslated too but at least they play correctly more or less.
>And OP said the patch made Popful Mail too easy.
OP played them as they were originally made, good for him.

There's no rebuttal to this btw, Ireland and everything he did was retarded. His legacy will always be that of a fanboy who thinks he's above the games he was licensed.

>On Exile 2 it was an issue of limited number of modifications because we weren't doing the game reprogramming, Telenet was. It was a small number of tries. And on the second-to last time, we had it *almost* right, so we added like +1 to the monsters, but it was like that scene with the fat guy in Meaning of Life where the waiter gives him that one wafer and he explodes. That +1 exceeded some limit internally and made the monsters exponentially harder rather than incrementally. Since it was our last "fix" and we had production discs, I thought we were screwed and had made an unwinnable game. Fortunately, with some time and special strategies, we found out you could finish it. We made one of the hardest games ever - by accident.

Why is Vic such a liar?

Also paying to save in Eternal Blue? Like what?
Popful Mail is goofy to begin with, so all the weird translations and such fit the game. But seeing weird shit in the Lunar games for instance where they say something along the lines of "if I had a creditcard I could open this door"

On another note, are there any other games like Popful Mail?
All I can think of are the two Genesis wonderboy games.

I don't understand the hate for Working Designs. Their changes to the original versions are all for the better in my experience.

i always wanted to try the PCE version of popful mail

its more similar to the computer versions but it has some extra levels that even the sega cd doesnt have

>> No.9746902

But doesn't that one play poorly? Same with snes version which looks nice but poor gameplay from what I understood

Nah, inflated health and weakened for difficulty is crappy balancing

>> No.9747146

>>9746902
No, the PCE version is the best version I played, I liked it better then the Sega CD version. It's not janky like the SNES version, it's rock solid design, slower gameplay then the Sega-CD version but still fun and proper difficulty. Falcom had great gameplay with the PC98 version, but it's held back by hardware, the PCE version fixes that.
If you liked the Sega-CD version of Popful Mail, I highly recommend trying the PC engine version, even if you don't read Japanese, try and power through it.

From what I remember, the only changes they made to Popful Mail is giving the enemies more health. Damage sponges don’t make a game more challenging, just more tedious.

i refuse to play any romhacks of anykind
i will only play the japanese original release or usa retail release

i dont care if working designs fills the entire game up with dick jokes i am playing the fucking original, whatever the flaws may be

anything else is faggy

>> No.9747380

>>9747308
No, enemies also got an attack boost. Some of them 2x-3x greater then the Jap version.
They also increased shop prices.
And decreased invincibility time after getting hit.

The decreased invuln time is the most frustrating.
