Did you ever pirate (or flat out steal) in the 90s?

One time when I bought something at a mall the cashier put a demo disc for hogs of war into the bag and I thought I shoplifted it and didn't install it because I didn't want to get caught and go to jail.

I didn't even know piracy or emulation was even an option. The only exposure I had to emulation was when I went to a friend's house, his older brother was playing the Japanese version of Pokemon Yellow on an emulator before it came out in the States. Blew my fucking mind.

Nes and snes roms. Also for a while Hastings (video store) had PC games you could rent; I don't know how they thought that would work but we just rented and installed them.

>> No.831292

Yeah, there's a flea market near where I grew up and there where a few guys who sold pirated PS1 games. The quality was awful, it was usually just a plain blank disc with the games name written in marker pen and their was about a 50/50 chance of the game actually working. Sometimes you got good stuff though, I remember getting Digimon World 2 once and that was never released over here

PC gamer in the late 80s...

One kid buys game, and within a week the entire school has it.

Early counter-piracy measures hindered us a bit early on. Code wheels and "fourth word of the 3rd paragraph on page 27 of the manual". Our access to photocopiers was limited back then.

By the time I was 16 I got a job and became a buyfag. Most PC games I have played since then were purchased.

>> No.831324

I first heard about emulation in 1999, so yes.

My computer at the time a shit, so all I bothered with was NES and GB roms.

I remember trying to run SNES emulators on my Pentium I and having too shitty of specs to play FF4 at full speed (which took me hours to download on 14.4k with frequent disconnections and no download resuming). And of course still trying to play it anyway while getting 10fps and having to use a keyboard.

The idea that we now have handheld devices that are capable of N64 or PS2 emulation still blows my mind. Technology has come incredibly far from when I was a child, even further from when my parents were children and it's advancing even more rapidly. Almost scared to imagine what's coming in the next 30 years.

Guess I derailed the original topic of discussion but... yeah, I did, and thinking back on how badly I wished I could just play a Super Nintendo game on my comp compared to how easily we can now DL a 10 gig game in minutes and play it in SPHWQXHD with an Xbox controller. We live in an era of ultraconvenience where if I didn't have some kind of moral imperative to pay for games I would just pirate everything because its objectively easier and better

>> No.831341

Yep. My dad knew this guy at work who gave us CDs full of glorious 90s cd-rip warez.

Got all kinds of great games and applications that way. Hell, one of the discs even had 1000s of MIDI files, which was pretty entertaining.

They had Half-Life, Quake, SimCity 2000, StarCraft, MDK, Turok 2, South Park: The Game, Grand Touring, Carmageddon, and probably like 100 more games. Also, being a kid and getting to fuck around with 3D Studio Max, Poser, Sound Forge, Photoshop, Flash, and all of the other software that was on those discs helped me get into stuff beyond just gaming.

It was fucking awesome.

The young internet generation have it too easy (although that first sable issue was 1999 so you could have found it online). But yea, those were the days.

Remember "woods porn"? The previous generation would stash (or dump) their old porn mags, and as kids we would find them. Amazing stuff.

The most common place to find woods porn was at campgrounds or those rental cabins in resort towns. It was an old tradition for guys on a fishing trip (without their wives) to buy porn for the road trip, and abandon it before returning home. Sharing porn was a form of male bonding in the 80s.

We would have swapped porn games but there wasn't enough of it. The only one that circulated our school was a bootleg NES "60-in-1" cartige with an adult puzzle game and also a strip poker game. They revealed really crude pictures of naked women. 8-bit porn games were dreadful.

There were also some crude porn games circulating on the local BBS sites but they were loaded with viruses.

I know you're trolling me, but I got nothing better to do so I will keep going.

You don't know how computers work. A Windows computer cannot run Mac software, and vice versa. The only way they can do it is through external software, like a virtual machine. This is because the base operating system interprets data commands differently.

Can a Mac's HARDWARE can run a Windows program, yes, but only if it has a Windows operating system installed.

Also, I helped build my first computer with my Mom, who is the owner of a computer consultant agency, at age 6. She, too, had soldering tools at her disposal (although I don't know why that would matter in building a computer, short of actually making the boards yourself, which would never fucking work unless you could also program drivers for each board you made).

There is no fucking way at age WHATEVER I or ANYONE could have made anything or altered the carts in any way that would allow Sega Genesis games to play on an SNES.

26. Why dont you think im telling the truth. I did do that gameboy thing though. It was really cool because I couls play them on he tv. I didnt have a mom growing up just a dad which is why I was so technical back then. If you mean architecture then pribably the case was I unacrewed the body of the systems and switched around a few chips and boards. Doesnt seem improbable. Have you the the systems? Only hassle was making the cobtrols work but i managed.

You know on second after posting, it might've just been me sucking at burning discs. I had the same bullshit issue when I pirated Wii games, the games would be finicky with the speed, especially on in game videos like anime openings.

I should get back to Wii, I have hard drives now and last I checked external ISO reading was possible, should be better and more efficient by now.

What is that supposed to mean? I was raised by just my mom, as my dad passed early on. As I mentioned before my mom was a computer consultant, and she taught me everything I know about computers, which is a lot, being as I'm an IT consultant.

Where were you when I was a kid? Do you know what caused my Wii weirdness? I thought about it being cheap discs so when I played with the Wii I used Verbatims.

In regards to the Playstation, no it never burned out, I did very short tests because I tested with Megaman X4 and Misadventures of Tron Bonne, X4 being original. As soon as the anime opening played, I can see when it's obviously slow/skipping so I just shut off and tinkered, rinse and repeat. Didn't have much play or chance to have burned out.

It is, and in most cases it's better than reading from discs, it reduces loading times and there's less chance of freezing.

Maybe. What Wii weirdness are you referring to? I saw someone talking about running Wii games from a hard drive. This IS possible. I do it. The secrets are that you have to format the hard drive (or a partition of it) to Wii format and copy game isos using a special tool that can read and write to that file system, and then the launcher you use on your Wii is very important too. I think the one I use is called WiiFlow or something like that.

>Japanese version of Pokemon Yellow
There was a now-defunct comic/toy store near me that had that. I was young, possibly 13 or 14. I didn't know what I was doing back then so the owner conned me out of eighty dollars for it "because it's an import and will never be released here". It didn't help that my scumbag friend kept going "buy it buy it so we can trade pokemon".

He also offered my younger brother ten dollars for a Charizard pokemon card when apparently they were extremely rare.

First game I emulated was the NES Dragon Ball game on Nesticle back in '98

From there I want on to the other Dragon Ball / Z games, those fun fighting games, those card based RPG things for the SNES/NES, that one Rock Paper Sicssors based RPG.

From there I went to other JP ONRY SNES games for DOS ZSNES. Only problem was I didn't speak Japanese and I would often get lost or stuck not knowing what to do. We made up stories to go along with most of them. Played Fire Emblem 3/4, Front mission, bunch of Dragon Ball/Gundam games, Final Fantasy II, III and V, some other random games with interesting names/screenshots

Then those IPS translation patches started popping up and I started playing these games while knowing what was happening.

Good times

Downloaded UltraHLE in 1997 or 1998, can't remember. Got Ocarina of Time from some download site(the rom) and it was around 25 megabytes. It took about three hours to download on 56K.

It was glorious playing an actual commercial game on a software emulator, even though my pc was crap at the time. Blew Nintendo's stack also, cause they hunted Epsilon and Realityman until they had to leave the internet permanently.

I pirated a few ROMs late in the 90s, if not very early 2000s. I don't remember. I was young.

Before that, though, I used to live in Argentina where they used to sell pirate consoles and game cartridges. I remember playing the Saint Seiya NES game, probably in Japanese, and not being able to get very far. There's no way I could have had access to a legitimate copy of that game in S.A. though.

back then I didn't knew much English, internet was slow and I had to tread through lots of ""top 100 rom sites" that, I swear, made me go around in loops forever.

But the idea of the benefits it would bring kept me focused on achieveing it.

Nowadays, I begin typing the name of a game in google, google sugestions the words "rom" and "iso download" itself for me, and a good link is found in like the first three searches usually.

I used to copy a few games with CD-R's

Of course back then it was a bit of a delicate procedure where you had to make sure screensavers were off and nobody touched the computer, not even the mouse while the burn process was happening otherwise something would go wrong for some stupid reason. And it took like 30 mins to 1 hour.

Nowadays i can burn a CD-R or DVD-R while watching a movie or playing a game and it will burn fine.
