So, I'm starting the Dragon Quest series, and I know everyone has a different opinion on where to start or which is best. I don't care about any of that.

What I DO want to know though is which version if each game is the best, so I know where to start looking.

I know each game has been released multiple times on various consoles/handhelds.

So if you could be so kind, give me the preferred version of all of them.

Thanks.

I, II and III - Snes
IV - DS
V - PS2
VI - DS, Snes would be great if it had a complete translation, it's ok.
VII - Probably 3DS, I don't know

What's wrong with the ps2 version of DQV? Have you even played it? I've played every version of that game, with the super Famicom version being my first time playing it through, and the PS2 version is my favorite.

As for the first three games, I enjoyed the Game boy color versions of those games. It honestly boils down to whether you want to play it on a portable or on a console/emulator.

the snes versions of I II and III look the best in my opinion, but the GBC versions are literally the exact same thing in terms of gameplay, so either is a great option and both are better than the nes versions. i've heard a lot of people put down the ds version of IV, but i thought it was really well done, and the graphical update is certainly nice on the eyes. if you have a way to play V on the play station (can read japanese, or can get an emulator to work and play it with a patch) then play it on a ps2, but otherwise the ds version is perfectly fine and even has more features than the ps2 version, though only a minor few.
never played VI, but i hear the ds version is fantastic.
VII is on the playstation, or wait for it to be out on 3ds in murrica.
VIII is ps2, no other versions
similarly IX is on the ds, with no other versions in america that i know of.

there ya go.
