I've seen loads of emulation devs saying that it wouldn't help emulation development because Nintendo could then DMCA claim the code. I don't know if that is true or not. Isn't like emulators of other consoles haven't very obviously benefitted from SDK leaks though, but even then they cannot and will not publicly admit it.
What I did see mentioned though was that they could have clean room implementation, but even then they'd be stupid to do anything major for at least a few months.

Yeah fuck you buddy! Open source and sharing of information is how to go. There's so many cases in N64 and PS1 emulation where some jack-ass makes a breakthrough but it's closed source and it never goes anywhere. Then it takes another team like 5 years to figure out how to do that. If it was open source they could build on each other and speed things up so much. Hell, N64 emulation is a hot mess since so much of it was closed and plugin based for so long.

That 3D rendition of the Eagle labyrinth makes me wonder if at some point Aquamentus existed in 3D as a test boss... Also, as far as I know, at some point, Dodongo's Cavern was Turtle Rock Dungeon, right?
I'm also curious about that girl NPC, the one found in the debug ROM. The one autists called "Aria" but IIRC she's "object_human"... She's too obiquious in the early versions of the ROM, every time Link left a house she was outside waiting so I wonder... Was she just a test NPC, OR at some point Link had a human partner (like Wes from Pokémon Stadium) before settling for Navi (who used to be just a cursor).

Dodongo's Cavern is fascinating to me because it seems like it has ALWAYS been there from the start, like they scrapped and re-did entire dungeons over and over again, and yet dodongo's cavern always seemed to be there albeit with small changes.

Even in the final game you can tell it's a bit different from the other dungeons, the rooms feel more polished and seem to have context to each one (like they were seeing how long it would take to design a dungeon fully embracing the idea of a 3D envoirment), the textures look more rough than in the rest of the game, and it generally feels like a link to the past dungeon translated to 3D

Don't forget the little extended platform in the room where you find the bomb, because they originally intended the dungeon to be played with adult Link, child link only being a thing rather late into development.

There's even what seems like a carved Turtle head with some bull's eyes to the eyes. I'm sure the idea of doing something to the skull's eyes to open the mouth was there from day 1. Ganon's Tower also doesn't seem like it changed much? If I recall correctly, the first 2 areas listed in the ROM are Dodongo's Cavern and Ganon's Tower.

But there's also the fact Dodongo's Cavern has a very old, unused texture in one room, but it's so stretched you really don't notice it.

Ganon's tower (not the little dungeons around it) does feel like it was done much earlier in development too, I even think the room where link fights a stalfo in the beta is the exact same in the final game where you fight the iron knuckles.

dodongo's cavern has a lot of unique textures and effects, not to mention the enemies that are unique to it are all really polygonal and blocky as opposed to quite literally the rest of the game where they all have skeletons

As for the little extended platform, forget about it, they straight up pulled that shit closer texture and everything just so child link could make the jump.

Correct, it is the exact same room, and Ganon's Castle Basement area must be a remnant of the "Mario 64" style, of having the entire game take place in Ganon's castle and warping to different areas from there.

Ganon's tower staircase is also the exact same as the final still, minus some texture details.

It looks like it's from the A+C era, however from the trailer it looks like the A+C era is the exact same game being made during the A+B before the BIG re-do that was the B-A-C buttons.

I think the only real loss between A+B to A+C is the fully 3D Market Town since it's the first trailer to have the prerendered backgrounds.

Posting another pic from when the game was in development:
The design of this castle-like room brings to mind the interior of Peach's Castle in Super Mario 64. It may reflect Miyamoto's original concept for Ocarina of Time.

What room? Post screenshot please.

Also, seems like Inside the Deku Tree was relatively late into development, when the game changed target from 64DD to N64 cartridge. The old screenshots of this period, Early Sword on A, were when we got first introduced to Child Link, as well as the Inside the Deku Tree map not being even slightly similar to the final version - I mean, why would the Deku Tree even have windows carved in? It's this room, the pic is from an emulator but on real hardware it feels like the real deal because the texture filtering is all blocky with mario 64-esque compression and the lighting is flat/bright. You can also see that the ground texture is the same for the walls and ceiling.

Beta Deku Tree is very strange indeed, I hate that people call it the wood temple when the layout is literally identical to the deku tree, the only difference is that this particular room looks like it goes around the main hub.

there's actually envoirmental maps in the final game that are nothing but pitch black except for the area around Link, so I guess that was their idea of simulating night early in development.

So far, nothing of crazy importance (game wise) has been leaked. The source code for n64, gcn, and wii is huge, but irrelevant for your average person.

The leaks are really slow coming, as they have 2 terabytes worth of stuff to look through. It's also been taking them months upon months to do it. This leak thing has been blown way out of proportion and everyone is acting like alpha builds of mother 3 have been leaked or something. They're probably slow dripping this so they DON'T get caught. They more than likely don't want anything traced back to them.

I'm glad they're doing it though. They're preserving multiple pieces of gaming history which would have never seen the light of day otherwise. I wish companies would just showcase unused, prototype builds of games so that we can see their process of game development. Instead they lock them away in an archive, never to be seen by anyone ever again. How many cool, unused concept arts do you think they're are for games like Ocarina of Time?

100% rumor, only the size and nature of the leak might hint at the fact.

I doubt the database for even just the main nintendo N64/GC/Wii releases would be that size if it was a compilation of nothing but every single build of the game made prior to release, 2TB is probably not nearly enough. I don't fucking know, Ocarina was a 54MB game, if there were a hundred builds of the game made during development and they were in the compilation it would be 5GB of content, that size would only exponentially grow according to the average size of a GC (1.2GB) and Wii (4.8GB) game.

There could be more but nobody is entirely sure what Wack0 actually took from the servers and Wack0 apparently didn't give all his stuff to any one person either, rather giving specific things to specific groups of people, which is why certain things leaked ages ago, some stuff just came out now, and it appears stuff is going to keep coming out in the future for a good bit.

Why a ton of it is all coming out in the span of a week or so is anyone's guess.

I just want to say this has been one of the most fascinating and enlightening discussions I've ever followed on /vr/. I'm old enough to remember the days of Zelda 64 screenshots and then later using GS codes to experience the "Beta Quest" buried within OoT, but outside of browsing the TCRF article occasionally I haven't really thought about it all that much. But you guys really seem to have done your homework. I always intuited that there was something simple yet polished about Dodongo's Cavern, that it was somewhat different from the others somehow, but I never would've figured that it was a remnant from the earliest days of OoT. Or that that one of the old Stalfo fight rooms from Zelda 64 made it into OoT. Good stuff, guys.

Zelda 64 fascinates me the most because before the change to cart and the semi-final HUD, it was completely a different beast. Probably no story was finished, but judging by Yuusuke Nakano's sketches, there's a LOT of mileage to take, like Sheik being separate from Zelda... Like in this piece from Historia and Encylopedia, show Sheik as an actual arab-like youth and nothing like Zelda.

Man, it's just... Well, for example, there's Nihon Falcom who write Ys and The Legend of Heroes games ahead of time and adapt and program the games around the story, while Nintendo with Zelda just keep making the game and rewriting the story as development keeps happening. What could have been Ocarina of Time will never stop fueling my imagination.

Zelda Gaiden was originally aimed for a 64DD release and you'd have to make progress within a real life 7 day loop, before the moon would crash. Although this was ditched when it moved to cartridge, there are remnants:
The "introduction" segment at the forest, with no timer is labelled Sunday in the game itself.
First Day is called Monday
Second Day is Tuesday
Final Day is Wednesday
Dawn of a New Day is Thursday
"Fourth Day" glitch is Friday. Saturday is an exact replica of it. Nothing seems to be programmed so no NPCs tied to a routine show up.

Maybe I've got this all wrong--and I probably do, because as I said, you really seem to know your stuff regarding this--but I remember Zelda 64 always being a cartridge game primarily and "Zelda 64DD" being an enhanced version of the game that they were developing alongside it. But the narrative I encounter these days is that it wasn't that Zelda 64DD was canceled, but that there was a "switch" from disk to cart.

This is my first time seeing this. Fascinating. I would love to have seen a OoT followup where Sheik was spun off into his own separate character (i.e. being a real legendary Sheikah figure whose persona Zelda "borrowed").

Okay. it does like this:
>Zelda 64 begins development after the tech demo sometime in 1995, aimed to be the Killer app for the 64DD
>lots of progress is made
>1997 kicks in
>half-way through, dev team realize 64DD is dead in the water and the game would be finished before the actual device was finished and sold
>Miyamoto splits the team, the main game proper was partly ditched and began getting reworked now for cartridge (as well as Child Link added)
>the other team would then work on "Ura Zelda" as an optional expansion of the cartridge version with some of the original ideas
>Zelda 64 Cartridge Version becomes Ocarina of Time
>64DD TANKS
>Zelda Gaiden is moved to cartridge, becomes Majora's Mask

Okay, that makes sense and mostly fits with what I remember from back then. But what do you think about the "Disk" file save remnant left over in Oot? I once glitched my game, whether it was through the cartridge-tilting trick or Gameshark shenanigans I don't remember, but I glitched my copy of Ocarina of Time so that one of the save files was locked and inaccessible with a "Disk" label on it like pic related. >To this day Nintendo insist Master Quest is Ura Zelda, but just "re-arranging dungeons" seems like a waste of resources, plus Ura originally promised so much more like new dungeons and items.
Thank you! I've never bought Miyamoto's line about MQ being UZ. If it really is then A) they misled the public with all their talk about Ura being its own separate project with a dedicated team, because it wouldn't take more than a couple of days to implement changes that Ura Zelda makes to the original experience, or B), it really was further along than that but the version they released as MQ was the only 100% stable build.

I feel like the 64DD wasn't meant to be just an expansion, but the second half of the machine that for some reason they decided to sell as an expansion (maybe because they though that they couldn't finish it in time for the launch).
Some big fuck up must have happened early in development that made Nintendo halt all software development for it.
Really can't imagine what the problem may have been.

>In a December 1997 interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Shigesato Itoi, Miyamoto confessed the inherent difficulty in repeatedly attempting to describe and justify the long-promised potential of the mysterious peripheral to a curious public. He said that it "would have been easier to understand if the DD was already included when the N64 first came out. It's getting harder to explain after the fact. (laughs)" To illustrate the fundamental significance of the 64DD to all game development at Nintendo, Itoi said, "I came up with a lot of ideas because of the 64DD. All things start with the 64DD. There are so many ideas I wouldn’t have been allowed to come up with if we didn't have the 64DD." Miyamoto concluded, "Almost every new project for the N64 is based on the 64DD. We’ll make the game on a cartridge first, then add the technology we've cultivated to finish it up as a full-out 64DD game.

>More delays were subsequently announced. The American launch was delayed to late 1998.The Japanese launch was delayed to June 1998, later adjusted by the apologetic announcement on April 3, 1998, that it would launch "within the year". The 64DD was notably absent from E3 1998, having been briefly described the day prior as "definitely not" launching in 1998 and "questionable" in 1999. IGN pessimistically explained that the peripheral's launch delays were so significant, and Nintendo's software library was so dependent upon the 64DD, that this lack of launchable software also caused Nintendo to entirely skip its annual Space World trade show in 1998.

The complaints from the investors were it would end up another sega 32x

Integrate it into the hardware and fucking boom. All they'd need to do then is package it with zelda 64 DD to justify the price increase, sell the older, non disk 64's at a discounted price until stock runs out (at which point you remove zelda DD from the new 64, lowering the price to a rate justifiable given the old 64 is now off the market and this is the new "norma" 64)

My own issues with their Metroid and DKC games aside, my biggest problem with Retro is that not once in their 20+ year existence has Nintendo allowed them to create a game using their own original IP. NCL has had Kensuke Tanabe babysit them every time, and more recently Risa Tabata. One dude hacked BroadOn's, Nintendo's and Microsoft's servers and stole bunch from there. BroadOn was the company who helped Nintendo develop iQue, and then worked on GC and Wii stuff (including the Wii's boot0/1/2, IOS, etc). Because BroadOn needed the source code of all the games that would be ported to the iQue, there's a high chance the hacker got the source code of all those games. So the chances of having beta Mario/Zelda/Mother are non-zero, if still unlikely, whereas the chances of having the source code of Mario and Zelda are much higher. The guy also got Pokémon stuff, like Gen 1/2 source code and builds, and we know the Gen 3 source code is in private hands.

Who the hell are you and what the hell do you know?

I have to admit something I don't like about Retro's Metroid. It leans too hard on the Western-type scifi, and doesn't embrace the Space Horror tropes form it's inspiration, Alien. The OST is too... "techno preppy", too. A lot of people give shit to Other M, deservedly so, but it also did a lot of right like more ambiental horror OST and some spoops on the way. Usually 2D Metroid only has a "catchy main theme" early on, and the further you get in the map, the spooper it gets, until it's completely dissorted, like Tourian's bubbly theme. Prime is all catchy techno. It's good but... To me, it's not Metroid.

Amen to that. I didn't even mind the fact that it was a little more cut-scene heavy than previous Metroid games... in fact, I pretty much spazzed out during the game's E3 reveal when they showed Ian Malkovich at the end. It's not hard to understand why if you think about it. Anti-piracy measures would cost Google a lot of money but not benefit them, and in fact be to their detriment, because the reality is that having "all media" encoded on your own servers is as close to an end goal as a company like Google could possibly have. >But why prevent a gaijin from buying a phone that has 2 old-ass Java games on it?

Don't bother thinking about it, you'll just get a headache.

Explaining it is a pain in the ass, but there is a large majority of Japanese people who despise gaijins and are not willing to work with them or trust them with anything considered of "national" value, plus there is a huge cultural barrier between preservation for both US and Japan (and copyright laws are draconian, just TRY to pirate a BIOS in Japan, that shit is very protected by the law cause of how proprietary it is)

Oh yeah, and Japanese people get super pissed at you if you DARE to go against their conservative "No one but Japan should have this :)" mindset or break some copyright law (even though they pirate shit as well regularly),

TL;DR: Japanese people suck at preserving shit and have to rely on gaijins which half of Japanese community detests for some reason and have distrust over.

However I don't think it would've made that much of a difference for nintendo during that generation, the GameCube was no Xbox, sure, but it was still a powerhouse on its own. It was all up to Microsoft, they bought bungie from apple, they bought rare from nintendo.

Zelda 64 had various phases of development, named after the HUD.
The final hud was first seen when the project shifted from Disk to Catridge, when the team had to scrap almost everything and rework the entire game (plus adding Child Link because of Miyamoto's whims), leading to the final game and, by proxy, the final story, since the game's plots got reworked and reworked several times.

True, also the fact that they had limited time and a lot of other work to do.

which is why someone should just hammer out a copy pasted closed source emulator

I know a leaker or two is reading this thread.

Can you release Zelda stuff? I've been wanting just a hint of it since I was a kid seeing it in Nintendo Power. Being able to see high quality footage, pictures, or even play it would be a dream come true to me.

All keys in those files are public, most are sdev/edev only and a few are for prod.
They are all known either way and even the 2016 leak had cooler shit.

There's likely going to be no more space world content. For Gold and Silver, it just happens that both the SW97 and SW99 roms were tucked away in a documents folder in the source code. And the source we have is localization source. There's no evidence so far that the hacker got into Nintendo's own archives. Everything likely came from BroadOn related servers.

Nintendo and Disney appear to have a strained relationship, as of late.

Wreck-It Ralph 2 was supposed to have Mario in a major role in the film and from context clues and comments from the crew it, we can tell it was probably going to be Mario from Donkey Kong Jr.

Specifically, Ralph is feeling insecure and thinks him and arcades are a thing of the past, and after going online, he sees a ton of different versions of himself, many of which are good guys or have better graphics (being modern) and he feels worse. Eventually, he comes across DK Jr. Mario who shows Ralph that, despite him not being the De Facto Mario, people still enjoyed his game, what it did, and come back to it - and with E-Shops or online arcades, people would enjoy him for years to come.

That being said, at some point, this direction changed and all Nintendo stuff was more or less scrubbed from the movie. It was probably pretty late too with the movie's extended pre-production and delays, and stuff like Mario Kart music being played in Disney World for a short stint.

Nintendo could have pulled out with Disney wanting to use Bad Guy Mario or it could be what Miyamoto is going on about now with making Mario into an icon outside of games. During the film's production was when Nintendo Land and the Mario movie got green-lit, so it was probably Disney that washed their hands of Nintendo for working with their competitors, or Miyamoto/Nintendo wanted something out of a partnership with Disney and Disney disagreed. (If that is the case, Nintendo probably wanted some focus on their stuff which Disney thought might detract from theirs)

Either way, I wouldn't expect a Disney/Nintendo team up anytime soon. If anything, it'd be Universal/Nintendo, which is probably far worse.

Yeah isn't Universal releasing a Mario movie in 2022? I can see why Nintendo wouldn't want Mario on a recent-ish Disney movie knowing that.

Honestly if nothing else comes out of this leak, the source code itself is still a pretty big deal. Bootleggers have all the tools necessary to make their own knockoffs now and even IF Nintendo tries to bark, those companies (specifically those from China) couldn’t give two shits and they aren’t gonna back down. If you ask me, id say some big shits about to go down.

>They're considering making it closed-source (CC BY-NC-ND)
But it'd be source available, if it's Near. So you can't make public forks, but you can inspect the code.

He's probably saying that they'd make it CC BY-NC-ND, and also not release the source code.

>> No.6398305

>>6398291
He didn't say he won't release the code, he just said people shouldn't have their hopes up because it won't have a free license like his earlier projects.

Why would he make a n64 emulator, and not release the code, is beyond me, that's not him at all. Even in the earliest days of bsnes (when there wasn't the higan/bsnes split) he still released the source code, yet he was using a proprietary license at the time (he later switched to a custom license iirc, then to the gpl2) because he didn't want forks

Not any weird shit from Nintendo. They keep the juicy stuff locked-down tight assuming it even still exists at-all. Pokemon Gold/Silver Spaceworld 97 was the rare exception.

To me it's from the forest temple, more especifically the second floor of the block puzzle where you can divert to the side and shoot the eye to get the arrows, If I'm not mistaken then there was an arch and a square entryway.

That's just a remnant of the Mario 64 engine, you can see in beta footage the camera going behind Link's head EXACTLY like it does with Mario
