It's actually preposterous to think that people actually beat this series on hardware back in the day. I know it was made for hardcore jrpg fans, but Jesus. I tried, but sucuumbed to save states scumming at the very end.

I don't have time for jrpg shit and I definitely don't have time for hardcoar jrpg shit. Wizardry 4 Return of Werdna fans think they are being cool by posting how unreasonable that game was but it just makes it sound like a big fruitless chore.

I'd say Cyber Knight is certainly less difficult or insane than Wizardry IV, it's more like making an arduous climb up a steep mountain with checkpoints, whereas Wizardry IV is like solving the world's biggest 5D Rubick's Cube. I can't blame you either way, I'm not sure if Cyber Knight I and II are actually worth completing other than for autist bragging rights, but the theme and the story kept me motivated, and they have some genuinely insane plot points that seem like they could have been lifted from Asimov Science Fiction. Plus you get a team of actual adults working a lightspeed space ship you can freely navigate around a solar system and they can deploy in customizable power armor. The battle system is pretty good too. All of that sweetened the deal enough for me to see both to their conclusion.

>>5675382
I'm not sure what the differences are, but I beat the SFC titles.

Ever played Phantasy Star II? The dungeons start simple In CK, but eventually they reach the point where they meet and exceed the madness of PSII, and then on top of that they're pressuring you on resource management through challenging random encounters. Here's an example from the first game, it's certainly the hardest one, it has multiple entrances and eventually leads to a single correct path with the item you seek. According to The Internet, these games were made intentionally to challenge hardcore gamers of its era, but they're well-designed and tend to be fair even if they are relentless. You get abilities to mitigate random encounters, but even at the end and with grinding you have to perform virtually flawless tactical moves on the final boss just to beat it. That's where I gave up and turned to save scumming.

I did it. It's fun as heck and I love the planetary exploration aspect. Going to a buncha worlds before finding where you actually needed to go is just part of the deal. Amused I didn't figure out what the barriers did or you could use them til the final boss of 1 where it's a neccessity. 2 is just a good game that fixes the majority of 1's issues and I'd reccomend it for all. And yeah, Cyber Knight is no more obtuse than PS1 or 2.

I recall the overworld and dungeon movement being fine, and being able to cancel random encounters, but the battles might trip you up since they're tactical grid. I'd bring fast forward just in case.
>>5677347
I completely agree, but since CK2's story is a direct continuation of the first one I ended up playing both back to back. Basically, I'm not sure what the difference is between the SFC port of CK1 and PCE original, but I imagine that, in regards to the sequel, CK2 holds up very well regardless of the platform.

>> No.5679452

The premise of 2 is really interesting in that all the alien technology your team brings back ends up getting stolen and leaked everywhere destabilizing the government of a solar system and you actually end up going commando to support revolutionaries and shit

rly wish i had finished it

>> No.5680007

damn ck2 looks cool. i've been missing out.
spent a few minutes with each and agreeing with others that 2 seems a ton better than 1. encounter rate isn't as ridiculously high, an attack on a defeated enemy is redirected to another enemy instead of nothing happening, there's an auto-battle option, and inactive party members get half experience from missions instead of none. also, when in the ship, you can jump anywhere, not just one square at a time (at least that's how it is at the start). there are other qol improvements too.

are some modules only combat and others only support? at the start, titan and cyber are in both lists (and can be used as both simultaneously), but the others are only in one.

i feel like there's going to be a lot of trial and error, especially with damage types as the game progresses. fiddled a bit and already learned stuff like shields do indeed add damage to melee attacks (although not as much as dual-wielding) and that the ai seems to be more conservative with options (and fields, i assume) in semi-auto than in full-auto (if they're enabled).

I played the SNES version a bit. Some of the graphics were quite impressive for a PC Engine port. I kinda just ignored the main plot and tried messing around ,visiting different places for the heck of it. Never got back to playing the game because I got distracted by some GOG games I bought at the same time or something.

Yeah, I like in 2 your base has a little communications area where npcs are all 'readings came in on an attack at x' 'some dude needs saving on y' so you can go back there for a refresh on any of the current missions. In 1 a lot of this is on the trader planet but other bits are all over the place so it helps to keep a notepad document of everything important you hear.

Inside the ship was a garbled berserker recording about their "queen" and the weapon the other recording (>>5691225) talked about, which is a melee weapon 5 times stronger than any regular weapon I currently have and even stronger than firing off the maximum number of consumable missiles at once. It feels like the sort of thing you'd get to use temporarily before turning in for a quest and it's called the Nega-Ball so I figured maybe it's related to the Black Globe needed for the micro-blackhole but the robot on the frog planet didn't say anything about it when I went there.

Another frog there refused our request for them to fight the berserkers with us saying they don't do the fighting thing, but he did use the black globe tech to make a new field for us that stops 100% of laser, beam, and heat damage (only other damage type is impact).

I haven't really been using fields at all so far.
They're basically single-use (lasts for the duration of the battle, I think) defensive buff spells that you can stock up to 4 of per character (restock on the ship). But nothing's done enough damage or lived long enough to feel an actual need for them so far. (Instead I just used the consumable ranged impact-damage items (missiles/greands/napalm/acid) to obliterate bosses since you can fire entire volleys at once.)
I haven't lost a fight yet, although in >>5696875 for the first time I had two people low. (There's two HP numbers per character there, one for the pilot's HP and one for the module (power suit).)
Maybe fields are about to start becoming necessary, although this new black globe field just obsoleted the laser- and plasma-specific fields I never used, which feels like they expected me to have been using them prior to this point.

Mother Soup appeared as a woman but said she could transform parts of the planet to look like anything. She then spent some time playing around in the character creator to change herself into a robot, a frog, a caveman, etc. to show off.

She dumps some info on us about the Mentana: they're basically those guys in Star Trek who made life on planets throughout the galaxy, only the Mentana weren't obsessed with making everything humanoid. They are the intelligent supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

So, this disintegrator weapon is an "option" type weapon, which are the limited-ammo (restockable on the ship) high-damage weapons. (>>5682842 >>5696930)
It only gets one shot per restock (per weapon slot; you can carry as many as you have M or larger slots on your module) but with a damage output of 250 it's higher than the preivious highest max damage output, which was the medium missile launcher at 50 x 4 (you can launch all 4 at once).

It's not a massive jump in damage but still a decent upgrade. More interestingly, this is a laser, making it the first Option weapon that's a damage type other than impact.

So...it's not the beserkers, it's the bersekers ancestors
And these machine lifeforms aren't actually robots, they directly evolved from silicon lifeforms on the 1st planet (Quaji) in the Olibo system.
The machine lifeforms normally don't have any reason to come into conflict or even contact with organic lifeforms but a bug occurred in their program(s) and a new form of life that combined machine and organic life traits was born, the mutant's called berserkers that model themselves after organic life.
Then it tells us the berserkers are beyond their ability to handle to please go kill them all.

...I still don't have the 2nd monument info

Went back to the warrior planet and they say they have a warfleet ready to strike the beserker home base...just as soon as someone tells them where it is. Welcome to my world, pals.
One of the guys here ponders contacting the Mentana to ask where the berserkers are, which is further making me think I'm really supposed to have the 2nd monument info already.

What I've started doing now is bringing the other characters (scientist & mechanic) around with me to revisit places.
For pretty much the whole game I've only had the two women (soldier & doctor) with me, except the couple of times my player characters says "hmm better bring the mechanic here."
Maybe this'll turn something up.
It's already triggered an additional conversation between the scientist (Shain) and the machine lifeform PR guy, although nothing immediately useful. It just says that the Mentana can open long-range travel gateways and the berserkers want that.

How do you get the data from the 2nd monument? The destroyed one on the caveman dinosaur planet in the Kuugel system: >>5683502

>> No.5702925

>>5702212
It has been awhile since I played, but I remember bringing a different character along to free the cavemen from their force fields that the berserkers trapped them with inside their dome. If you have the right party member, you can step on the corners of the force fields and that character will automatically get to work. I can't remember more than this, or who that character was, for the life of me however. You get a videodisc in that area from a ruined spaceship though, and you have to use it on a crashed ship on another planet (The ship was called the Europa in the fan translated rom I think). Btw, you're likely right about >>5700986, because I remember dealing with the cavemen and the berserkers as one of the first things I did, whereas you're arriving at it now. It seems like the game allows an open-ended approach to solving the monuments at least.

Well that looks like a core.

Overall I think the dungeon complexity for this game was a little overstated. There's a little bit of finding the right staircases to go up and down between levels to get to the right section but it's not like Wizardry or something.
I remember Phantasy Star 2 being more complex than this but it's been almost 30 years since I played that so my memory may be unreliable.
