Okay guys, I need major help here. This is something I've been trying to figure out for years. And no where on the internet have I found the easter egg or the cheat or whatever to allow this event to trigger.

In fact! Whenever I mention it to anyone, nobody fucking believes me. They do a quick gamefaqs search and say I'm confused with a later event in the game", which, thanks guys, like I'd be coming here first and not spend hours looking for it on the web.

And so all I ask is for an experienced, obsessive Final Fantasy IX player to help me with this. In fact, I've played the same part of the game over, and over, and over again, trying to figure out how to do this thing that had occurred for me before on accident.

Before I explain what it is, just throwing it out there that if I had a single doubt in my mind about this I'd accept that I was simply remembering wrong from my first gameplay through. However I don't have a single doubt about this. In fact, I remember the contrasts vividly and can explain them in full detail.

Alright guys, so here it is. You can trigger an event, or maybe even an easter egg, that, instead of Garnet/Dagger cutting her hair at the end of the game, she'll do it right outside of Ice Cavern. She'll do it right after Zidane tells her that she should hide who she is. She takes his dagger, cuts her hair off, and then names herself Dagger (or whatever the player wishes.) Or, she could have named herself dagger, and then cut it off. But it's at that precise moment.

In fact, her menu icon with short hair from that point on is different than her menu icon that appears when she does it by speed of plot at the end of the game. Icon at the end, she looks much happier, at the beginning with short hair, she looks so fucking cute, but her head is in a different angle, and she's not super happy or anything.

So if anyone is obsessive and wants to help, PLEASE do. I found one person on the net who had the same experience, but they got dismissed.

FFIX is my favorite game OP. Sorry, but you're mistaken.

I say this because]spoiler] it is a very very major plot point when she cuts off her hair. It's to become a new and better person[/spoiler]

Like, its a really important part of her character. Something like that wouldn't be undermined with an "easter egg".

FFIX is my favorite game OP, you're mistaken. It's an important plot point when she cuts off her hair. It is a VERY important part of her character development.

They wouldn't undermine that with an "easter egg". I wouldn't even consider that an easter egg since it would destroy her character development later on in the game.

OP here-
No, I understand the plot point, and just how important it is in the plot. However, if you get to that point when she had already cut her hair- it's still a huge transition for her, but well, her hair is already cut.

If I could figure out how to actually pull up files from a game itself, I'd be doing just that for this specific thing. At least for proof.

Upon googling this, I found one person who has the exact same experience as me, saying it's at the same place, saying it happened the same way. But, they were quickly dismissed as "No it happens at the end of the game when she returns back to Alexandria."

I wouldn't be so adamant about this if I wasn't so positive. I've played the game so many times. And yet that is still very much so a thing that happened in one of my play throughs.

The act of Garnet/Dagger cutting her hair is a pre-rendered cutscene triggered only by plot and is a critical point in her development.

I know sometimes hidden game data is discovered long after a game's release, but this simply isnt one of those cases. Nothing like what the OP described exists in the game.

Not unless your copy is some incredibly magical one-of-very-few earlier copies that nobody to this day has ever heard of since the game was released almost 13 years ago.

Okay, everything I remember about the differences; This was my sister's playthrough, but in a way, mine too, because although it was my game my sister is older and bla bla bla. But I watched her play far into the game, to that point.

When she cuts her hair at the exit of of Ice Cavern, it was after Zidane told her that they kind of needed to go incognito. She grabs his dagger, and, the order of this part I'm mixed up in as I've played this scene hundreds of times trying to see if there was a cheat by naming her- she either asks for what the dagger is called, names herself, and then cuts her hair, or asks what it's called, cuts her hair, and then names herself. (Either way, Steiner was horrified, and even Zidane freaked.)

At that point forward, all cutscenes, she had short hair. Even whenever she's wearing different clothes, like that white dress, she has short hair. I remember this because while my sister was playing that playthrough, I was playing my own playthrough when she wasn't around, and, after begging her to tell me how she did it and she didn't know, I kept a vivid eye on how different the cutscenes looked. They were only different by hair. Also, the sprites were changed as well as the menu, as to be expected. Even on memories, flashbacking to stuff, it was appropriate to whatever hair she had in that playthrough. (Which at the time, I thought that was a really cool detail. I mean now I expect it, but I didn't then.)

But that scene, I remember my sister's playthrough of it first because she got farther than me faster. That scene wasn't particularly notable to me because I wasn't EXPECTING that to be a huge defining moment for her hair.

But as I remember it, Zidane went to talk to Garnet and she just totally accepted everything and explained her position of the situation I don't remember it as vividly as when she cut it because of course I wasn't envious of my sister at that point. But the only cutscene though that I remember, [cont]

was that she was smiling super serenely at Zidane, and it was like, a moment of like, zen, and peace, and just happy. It was a huge deal for her. Even though she didn't cut her hair, it was like, a moment, dude. Of acceptance.

And then, her icon changed to this smiling short-haired Dagger, which I thought was uglier than how it was before with just normal short haired Garnet.

When I got to that point and she cut her hair, it blew my fucking MIND.

Dude, I've personally ripped the FMVs from the PSP PSone classic version of the game. There are no such cut scenes.

On top of that, the FMVs take up a shit ton of space on the internet, and every ISO on the net with the FMVs is around the same file size. You're implying that both sets of FMVs are on the discs and I'm sorry, but that just doesn't fly at all.

... don't mean to fuel this even further, what I'm going to say is mostly memory failing me, but the reason this thread caught my interest is that when I played this game for a second time, I was surprised to see how later in the game the hair-cutting scene happened, because I remembered it happening much earlier. I don't recall nothing about differences during cut-scenes though, so I can't support OP's story with mine (then again, memory alone can't be trusted I guess).

(First playthrough was when it was released. It was a PAL, spanish version, converted to NTSC, on a modded PSX. I couldn't read english back then. That second playthrough was regular NTSC-U version, during 2010)

But honestly, while I do believe the possibility of a different order of events on a rare version of the game, I can't say I believe the possibility of the existance of a different version of this FMV http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWZCvn1Fpjc were Garnet just stands there smiling, with her hair already short, like you descrive here >>558978

Maybe but I personally don't think so? Because that was my all time favourite game, and so I didn't simply drop the game only to pick it up years later. I was always playing it. Soemtimes I got frustrated, and stuck, and I'd start again, sometimes I'd start over again and again trying to replecate it, but from that first play through (with my sister) I was literally playing my file side by side with hers and comparing the differences.

So although you might be right and I admit that? I really don't think so. Like, I reeeeally really don't think so. Especially when a few other people are saying they have/had the same experience, even some saying they didn't realize it wasn't normal.

Due to the way pre-rendered cutscenes work, you would need two sets of FMVs on the discs. FFIX was a 4 disc game and FMVs take up a lot of data space. Do you really believe that there was room for two sets of FMVs?

How delusional can you be?

OP here- Before I go, I just want to sum up what we've learned over the course of this thread.

We've learned that this MAY or MAY NOT be possible, but we can't agree on that yet. Although people who think it isn't possible are pretty adament about it. But there are arguments.

On one hand, it is entirely possible that I'm remembering incorrectly. I find this unlikely, but it could be possible.

On another hand, there seems to be confusion over the version of the game I originally played on. Some of the people here believe that it could have been something that was caught early on, but there are those few games.

This idea is confirmed further when other people here find this playthrough the 'norm', buuuut it is very likely they're trolling us all, be that you can't find any of this through google.

Another defense is that apparently there's concept art of something like this, but idk??? I haven't seen it. Might look tomorrow.

But arguments against this is that many people have picked apart this game, ripping it, and even doing playthroughs where it didn't work for them. Although we still don't know if the version of this matters. If it doesn't matter than woah I'm wrong.

Some people did a playthrough and and it didn't work for them. Although I've been doing this multiple times.

Some people are saying it's literally not possible for the scenes to be changed all motion picture-y. Which I dunno. May be true! I also don't know though if this is a different version.

One person did this on a rom! But it could have been modified we don't know.

And another person says this happens 100% of the time for them and that they'd post about it tomorrow.

One person has family member apart of the company who says this is not possible.

So there you have it folks. At least we're a step closer. I'll be bringing more info tomorrow.

No, really, they way you're describing it is not possible, with the exception that a lone madman broke into Square's offices, stole a beta copy of FFIX 6 months before the Japanese version came out, translated and filled in the missing elements of the game exactly like they would be when they were released, and then put it in a store for you to buy.

At which point he swapped a fake "clean" version of the game for his uncensored one.

I'm not saying it happens all the time and for the life of me I can't find any instances of this occurring, but sometimes, a developer with an axe to grind, a warped sense of humour or a death wish could conceivably slip in versions of a certain game to a manufacturing plant and pass it off as the genuine article.

Right after the Ice Cavern, she asks what the dagger is called, names herself "dagger", then cuts her hair off in-engine. No CG scene or anything like that. Then she has short hair for the rest of the game.

And I'm not just remembering it that way because OP brought it up. I always liked that scene (I think short hair on women is sexy, lol) and never forgot about it.

My origonal copy is long gone, and I only have a GH copy now, but I still feel the need to replay it to see what's up now.

I'm just a bit deflated now, guys, that's all. I'll still post what version of it is if my mom finds it and sends me a pic and info.

Also, >>566789 No I said they were changed. Which in all honesty, and I feel bad for this, I can't understand how there wouldn't be two different FMV's. I mean, I know this is a long game and all, but it's also four CD worth of game, and those cutscenes aren't particularly long.

But now I'm just gonna be like a deflated balloon over here, and hope for those texts. As well as for that one anon to deliver (but seeing what time it is, I kind of doubt they will.)

It doesn't matter. They take up a shit ton of space. You're ignorant to most matters regarding this subject yet continue to push your false memories.

Have you guys ever heard of the Mandela Effect?
It's something along the lines of a group of unrelated people that have specific memories of Nelson Mandela dying in prison and the riots afterwards. There's other cases involving other events as well.
Maybe we have a Mandela Effect on our hands? A Princess Garnet Effect.

I don't know if you noticed dude but I kinda stopped pushing. I thanked the person who looked up the script. I'm deflated. I'm not pushing this shit anymore. I am going to do the thing I said I was going to do when it happens, though. I've stayed off this threat all day only to thank that one person and then reply once more, and now this. I'm not pushing it anymore. People can believe whatever they goddamn want I was just so positive.

Maybe it's doable with a Gameshark?
It wouldn't add a scene or change the fmv's, but it'd definitely alter the in-game model.

I have no idea though since I've never used one for the PSX.

As someone who decompiled the isos, those fmvs are pretty damn small so maybe you should shut up about things you don't know about. But yea there's no alternate cutscenes.

>but it's also four CD worth of game
The entire game is on each CD, the only differences are things like FMVs and perhaps certain tracks and areas, the former of which take up a disproportionate amount of space.

That's right. In theory, if it had no FMVs, FF7, 8, and 9, could be single-disk games.

>> No.567094

OP, the same thing happened with my friends. Both said you could get a third legendary machine in Kirby's Air Ride called the Kracken. The funny thing was, they had only known each other for a couple years, and both had spent their time playing Air Ride separately.

They were both insistent that it existed and were using each other as their proof, because how could two people remember something wrong?

tl;dr You're wrong or trolling. People misremember things.

>> No.567647

I really want to concretely 100% prove or disprove this. I know it doesn't happen but it'll annoy the shit out of me without some solid concrete proof. I'm loading up Final Fantasy 9 EU version Disk and digital an ill make a bunch of save files at choices up to that point and see if anything happens. I also think I have a cheat disk I could try. If anything different from what I remember happens I'll take a photo of the screen and put it up here.
Mind you I had a similar situation Where I was full on convinced for years that you could go to the original world map in Final fantasy 7 (without the craters and all that shit) on disk 3 and it was never proven. So it's likely OP is just remember shit his brain mixed up. Either way, I'll do my part. Anything to keep me from studying for this calc exam.

I recall this myself, OP. And this isn't my psyche filling in gaps or whatever psychobabble someone else said ITT.

I played the game once and never went beyond the point where the little girl summoner thing whose name I can't remember joins the party.
Anyway, I remember not only the scene but also how I felt about the scene.

>oh. princess bitch cut off her hair. this reminds me of that scene in wild arms when princess bitch cuts off her hair. okay.

This was a kajillion years ago now, so most other details about the game are fuzzy. For example, I don't remember most character names. I remember this FF's Cid being a king or something? I remember people turning into stone. I remember hating the chocobo mini games. And I very clearly remember thinking the greentext above. Oddly, I don't remember the ice cave, but I know the exact point I stopped playing: a boss fight against some green giant. I stopped cuz I got bored of trying to steal some rare item I'd heard this boss carrying (don't remember which) and never coming up with anything and haven't picked the game up again in a literal decade.

No: I no longer own a hard copy of the game.

This thread is a prime example of a well studied and known phenomena known as "viral false memories". I like to call it that as an extension of what social psychologists call it. You can implant false memories into someone who will then do the same to others when talking about it.

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/media-spotlight/201211/implanting-false-memories

All of you people who say you remembered it that way are either OP samefagging, trolls, retarded, or victims of OP implanting false memories into your brain.

Congratulations.
