I'm currently trying to get back into the genre, after a 10+ year hiatus. Before that I played shmups for 15+ years. It's hard to get back to old shape now. I know how to handle patterns but my reflexes start to fail me. The fate of the oldfag.

good luck man. about four years off here, restarted last year and took about three months to clean out all the cobwebs. pleasantly surprised that reactions are still decent at 34. finding practice time was the biggest hurdle.

I don't like posting in these threads because I feel like I'm being judged, but I've been playing a lot of the Darius games on Genesis and PS1 lately. Sagaia for Genesis in particular is lots of fun. Still haven't beaten it yet - I tend to quit the game after getting one game over and come back to it another time.

A good scoring system keeps you engaged during early stages, where the risk of dying is near non-existant. Some modern Cave games I can't even wrap my head around though.

And the only time people mention someone is to insult them, like certain tripfags, most tripfags left or rarely post anymore. To be fair I don't even see that many RPG threads. There's a FF one, a Diablo one, the bait "linear rpg" thread with a zelda pic... not much else, there's probably a few others below in the catalogue, but clearly not the majority.

The fact that this is so hard for you to grasp reveals how clueless you are about arcade gaming
Let me make it even more obvious for you:
When you want to discuss these games and their strategies, only those who have truly played them know what they're talking about. Not many. When you ask around, you notice it's always the same person giving advice from one particular game, then you figure out that he's played it.
But I guess that you prefer an environment where everyone is clueless and you can't discern any anon from the rest.
There's a difference between a community of NPC anons that all feel exactly the same and know shit, and one of still anons but with distinct experience an even opinions.

Let me put it in another way: what arcade game do you play? Are you good at any? If you then answer me positively and show your knowledge, from then on you're that anon that is good at that game, which might even get a nickname from the rest as a way to more easily ask him stuff in the future.
But you won't, because you don't know shit, and want a board of people just like you.

Man I feel you guys. Been about 8-9 years for me. Picked up a broke Sega CD recently (turned out to just be the fuse) to repair to replace a dead model 1. Tested with Sol-Feace and got hooked back. Shaking the rust off slowly but feels good man.

I've been here for years, and on /vr/ since the very beginning of the board. While there were some whinning about the dreamcast not being retro and the likes when DC stuff was posted, there were still some good stuff going on (those roommate ryoko threads were great). /vr/ wasn't as bad as it became in 2016.
Just because you've been here for less than 3 years doesn't mean /vr/ has alway been like that.

Can't say worst, I've only just gotten into the genre via /m/-related stuff like Raiden/Gradius/R-Type. Favorite is R-Type DX, I usually recommend it in GB/C threads around here.
