The best is Bangai-O easily. That game is pure fun and has some wonderful level design. Guardian Heroes and Alien Soldier are up there too.

Worst is harder. Stretch Panic is their worst game overall but not retro. Silhouette Mirage is pretty fun in the Jap version but the WD port sucks balls. I'm going to go with Light Crusader since it controls shitty for a Treasure game and a lot of the puzzles kinda suck or rely on the graphics being ambiguous.

DC has better graphics, sound, and pacing which leads to more enjoyability. On N64 you have to farm fruits to power up your bomb and your starting mech's power sucks and doesn't carry over to each level, so you have to use an in-game shop to keep upgrading it. DC version replaces the fruit bomb with proximity bomb, so you get more energy back based on how closely you use your bomb to bullets and enemies, and does away with the shop system completely. Also DC is the only one in English if you care about dialog/plot. Some people say N64 has a better controller for it, but I don't mind how it works on DC; the stick controls your 8-way gunfire, while the face buttons control your mech movement. Anyway, just play both and come to your own conclusions.

Just to give you a different angle from what >>5390550 said, you don't really need to be at full power in order to play the game. The level up/shop system on the original isn't something you will be doing in every level, it's not even easy to do, you can only upgrade if you manage to do combos of over 100 explosions at once. You could say the DC version is an easier version, besides there not being an upgrade system and being at full power always, Mami's shots which were weaker on the N64 version here deal the same damage as Riki's shots on DC (the catch is that Mami's shots can rebounce on walls, so while her shots deal less damage, they can be more effective in closed areas), and also DC version gives you HP refills from enemies, while on N64, HP refills are limited per level.
And I do think the controls are better on N64, especially the suggested scheme Treasure gives: shoot with controls stick and move with d-pad.
DC has better graphics (although I think the N64 graphics have a charming, more retro aesthetic to them), different music and it also has a couple extra boss fights.
to be honest I love both versions, in fact, play the DC first, simply because it's easier to get into. If you want more, go for the N64 original.

That's not entirely true. The good ones are excellent exercises in memorization!

Honestly, a lot of what makes Ikaruga boring is that there's very little choice on how to best proceed through a level. This is what makes it boring, there's no real choices to be made, no tradeoffs to balance in order to work towards a better score.

Just like every other shmup. People love to say Ikaruga is a boring puzzle game with one path when playing for score, but playing for score in any other shmup is exactly the same. Ikaruga is held to a different standard because normalfags like to name drop it.

>>5390939

Man, I would much rather play a good fucking puzzle game like Puyo Puyo or Magical Drop or Puzzle Money Exchanger.

That being said, I think you hate shmups, >>5390939 which is fine, but there's a lot out there that have a lot more depth to play and score than Ikaruga. For example, I hate/love Recca just because surviving is still what I have to focus on and I can't even begin to think of scoring yet. Something like Muchi Muchi Pork however I'm chasing bigger and bigger scores and while there is a lot of memorization and feeling out how long you can milk bosses for, there isn't yet any autistic perfect run that I've seen.

And even then, even if a game has a theoretical/TAS perfect version of it doesn't mean it's bad to play. MTPO isn't a bad game because you can memorize it to the level that people can beat the game blindfolded now.

Hm, shaking actually takes frames, and by shaking you can improve your attacks (for example, grabbing a missile and shaking it to make it bigger). You have to time it well because you could get hit while shaking. It's part of the gameplay, sorry.
