Let's talk about the Odd, The Obscure, and the Disturbing.

First up I have Virtual Nightclub, a FMV game that (I guess) is meant to simulate what a person from the 90's thought a virtual night club would look like. Includes interviews from sci-fi authors (including the author of snow crash) and a suprising amount of liscencing for an obscure game put out by a nobody company

I can't say I've never seen this posted, but it's rare. Even back in the '90s a lot of kids I think had the Humongous games, but the Headbone games were less common. They had surreal cut-out art styles and unique premises.

In this one you have to explore a bizarre rural setting for a cyber-bug that'll help you win a bug show. In the sequel, you have to get your science fair project back from retarded mafiosos.

They were optimal kids' games in my mind because for the most part they didn't treat you like an idiot, and they are written well. Even as an adult you still have to use your head a little bit and think abstractly.

It's simultaneously beautiful and horrifying, enlightening and disgusting, all at the same time. And it's educational! With each legend you encounter it gives you a concise summary of what you've seen and how it affected the flow of Japanese history.

I've never seen it discussed here actually but a pretty bizarre "game" is Kamikuishiki-mura Monogatar, a game made by a Japanese cult. For anyone unfamiliar with Aum Shinrikyo I suggest researching them but essentially they were Japanese cult mostly active in the 80's and 90's. They become pretty influential during this time as they're numbers grew pretty large. They were known for taking weird influence from western Sci Fi and anime of the time, this attracted a lot of otaku and computer nerds to the cult. In 1995 they issued a attack on the Tokyo subway system using sarin gas and ultimately killed 13 people and injured about 1,050 others.

It's weird knowing a genuine cult responsible for the death of people, we don't even know how many cult members were killed for whatever reason, actually exists.

Had no idea Aum Shinrikiyo made games. They also had anime!

They were genuinely damn close to getting much larger death tolls than 13, but the members were kind of incompetent, mostly due to being starved and constantly drugged up. If they were actually concious, they genuinenly could have become a terrorist organization on the level of Al Qaueda

Not to mention they were pretty clearly the inspiration behind the blue cult from earthbound

I had thought it eas a normal germ spore and when someone told me it had bodies it blew my mind.

The early 3d of things like germs really does give a horrorific atmosphere, doesn't it? I often see people say "why don't indie devs copy the bad early 3d of the fifth gen of consoles?", used to ask that myself, and it amazed me to learn that creating early 3d like that isn't really possible on modern technology. To create old 3d it would have to be on old technology, how weird is that? It's sad though, things like the original Baroque (not the shitty remake) really do have a atmosphere unmatched. It's definitely something I would love to see again in gaming.

>> No.4974243

Really? I must confess I don't know much about graphic rendering and such. Why would it be impossible to replicate the old look?

Early 3d is really weird because it almost looks good enough, but then it doesn't, and it falls straight into creepy valley when it tries to be something that's not cartoonish. The dull colors don't help either.

I'm really not the best person for this stuff but I've seen people discuss it in detail. Low poly is easily possible obviously but recreation of old 3d seems impossible.
>>4974316

I believe so. It's supposedly some horror game, something about some germ infecting and mutating people I think, not that the plot is of interest. The gameplay is what reminded me of LSD, you move and aim in a first person perspective very slowly in sad and lonely empty 3d spaces.

Back on topic (I love lpotl but still) I'm reminded of "Produce", after looking up Soft and Cuddly.

Produce was basically a cheap but interesting Japanese PC-88 game made by a company mostly known for eroge and hentai games. Funny to think someone bought this thinking it anime titties only to get a surprise.

The game involves four central characters: Gilbert, Toshio, Tina and Sayaka. Toshio is secretly in love with Sayaka but he is crushed to find out Sayaka loves Gilbert. Toshio one day wanders into a abandoned building only to find a Lovecraftian monster. The being tells him that if he can bring his three friends to them it will kill Gilbert for him and make Sayaka love him. He agree to do this and once he gets his three friends up to it The monster absorbs Sayaka and presumably kills the three boys, betraying Toshio.

What makes Produce really interesting though is its bizarre gameplay concept. Toshio will monitor each of the three friends through one of the monsters eyes to see what they are doing in the building. As the player you have to strategically place various monsters around each floor to scare your friends further into the building. Your three friends wander the building and can explore further or try to run away. If a single friend gets away they alert authorities of the building's true nature and it is demolished, game over. Each friend has different behavior, one may find a particular monster not too scary while a different friend finds that same monster horrifying. You also have to monitor each character's heart rate, if you scare them too much they will die of a heart attack which is also a game over. Essentially it's like a bizarre horror themed manager about a boy trying to kill his friends.

Yaku is a pretty bizarre game. I was actually pretty surprised at seeing in on the PSN Network considering that almost nobody knows about it has played it. I don’t know how many times I can actually play I though, since not only is it unsettling, but you can switch between characters at will so there are a ridiculous amount of ways to view the story. Pretty cool idea actually, that works a lot better than it did I Machi.

Now on the other hand if you want to talk about an amazing game that got swept into the shadows of history (even though it had a DS remake) is Tokyo Twilight Busters. This has to be one of the coolest games that I’ve ever played. The story, gameplay (which switches between investigative story mode and point and click adventure mode, and features RPG-lite combat), sound and graphics are all amazing. If you can read Japanese fluently (it’s set in the Taisho period so expect some Kanji not used in Contemporary Japanese) I highly recommend it.

>>4974232
Baroque Syndrome is probably one of the better Sound Novels out there. Fairly linear, multi-story, dead end system but the stories are pretty cool. If you like the PSX Baroque I’d say give it a shot since it’s the prequel to that game.

Anyways, I don't know if this would count as "obscure" but it certainly isn't well known, but Escape from Hell is a interesting RPG made off the Wasteland engine. It's about a teenager who got dragged down to hell and has to save his girlfriend. One of the highlights includes the fact that hell is full of historical figures that can join your party, meaning you can finally have that party of Yourself, Stalin and Hitler.

It was honestly pretty mediocre, but the concept and fact that you can be buddy buddy with hitler makes it an interesting curio.

Not either one of you, but you could also try PCem; it's a hardware emulator specific to 80s and 90s PC architecture and really good. It's almost as easy to use as Virtualbox, but appears to run a lot better since it's focused on emulating specific chips instead of being a generalist. However, it's very demanding on the CPU, and sadly MOAR CORES doesn't seem to help much, but my 3.5GHz/core system can run a 133 MHz Pentium DOS machine that performs better and more accurately than DOSBox, and a 90-133MHz Windows 98 VM very reasonably. It even supports voodoo graphics emulation.

The Next World (Mondo Futuro) is a FPS with interesting ideas, like the fact you're completely harmless, enemies can easily kill you and the only mean of destroying them is to use vehicles, sometimes even giant creatures; they serve you as weapons and also helps you to move faster or even fly. Your goal is, if i remember correctly, to grab orbs like objects in order to fix your time machine (?) and voyage through the levels; these are always populated by factions at war, and you can decide to be an ally for whoever you want and do side missions for them. The only thing i've found about this game is a discussion on an italian forum, luckily there's gameplay and download, but that came a lot later and people still don't know about it. It's like the quintessence of "obscure". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgdBJbXxTvw the intro with the bald man talking near a fire gave me nightmares when i was little.

I had an original copy of the game, but i don't remember how i got it. The easiest guess would be that it came as a prize on a box of cereals; it wasn't unexpected at those times to have very obscure games shipped through cereal boxes, only because games were the "new" kool thing. That was probably the only way; in fact, the only pictures you can find on the internet are related to that very gameplay i've posted before. There's absolutely nothing else about it, the fact alone we have this little is a real gift, because i myself couldn't find anything about it some years ago. It was like i've played a game that never existed... Then, finally, the download arrives. I can finally experience this thing once again. I'm not saying it was good, far from it, but i do have some nostalgia surrounding it. I'll post it here, maybe someone will find it useful. https://www.mediafire.com/file/k8w6q2u2uqw80qs/Mondo+Futuro.rar

Alright, been looking into some oddities for this very thread, hopefully something I post interests you.

Ugetsu Kitan on the ps1 is a Japanese only horror adventure game. What makes it interesting is that it is actually a recreation of Ugetsu Monogatari (雨月物語, Tales of Moonlight and Rain) which os a collection of nine supernatural tales by the Japanese author Ueda Akinari, and was first published in 1776. Gameplay is nothing insane but it's weird enough to maybe hold some interest.

Originally called Quarantine on DOS and the 3DO, it was later released as Death Throttle for the Japan only Saturn release and Hard Rock Cab for the Japanese only Ps1 release.

Essentially it's Crazy Taxi, Carmageddon, and 90's cyberpunk thrown in a blender. In a dark cyberpunk future you play as a cab driver who has to escort various people. The problem is while doing this everyone is trying to kill you. It's not as intense as other more famous vehicle combat games but it's a pretty fun premise and the cyberpunk atmosphere is cool.

Superhero League of Hoboken is a pretty interesting rpg. You control a party of super heroes as you defeat villains and do other heroic tasks. It's more on the humorous side, kind of reminds me of something like Sam and Max and similar 90's adventure games from the time in terms of writing.

Otocky is a horizontal shooter original released for the famicom disk system. The game has a really interesting music theme and, just like Rez, the player can interact with and change the music based on their actions in the game.

Released late in the super famicom's lifespan, 1997, Solid Runner is a cool jrpg with a sort of cyberpunk mecha theme. As the player you use your combat mech suit to go around the city stopping crime and solving other cases. The art is really impressive and the game has a really slick presentation in general. Sadly though it seems no English patch exists for it.

Learn Japanese to near-adult fluency. Read some books on Aum Shinrikyo in English that give you some of the key terminology.

Shoko Asahara was a very, very typical cult leader. He took part in more than one cult of his time, read very widely and made a decent syncretic theology. He was well versed in Buddhism; they have a photo of him with the Dalai Lama.

There's a lot of little details about their vocabulary which is very buddhist. They misused a lot of words like "shambhala", "om"/"aum", "Mappo" (Kali Yuga), "Vajrayana", etc. I can't remember much of it now but the books are really worth reading.

They were only moderately successful as far as Japanese cults go. Omotokyo, Shukyo Mahikari and Nichiren Shoshu all did a lot better. Aum didn't get the membership Asahara wanted to avert the eschaton, failed to gain seats in the election, and were going to be crushed by the government soon even without attacking (murders, lawsuits, tax evasion, illegal weapons etc). I think Shoko Asahara saw the writing on the wall and that's why he sped up the coming of the eschaton (1999 -> 1995 -> 1994) and the attack.

Consider, for instance, those who assist with creating, maintaining, and improving emulators or engines, and ensuring that they're able to be distributed to and used by those who wish to utilize them. For your information, I personally have assisted with this on several occasions and in several categories.

Or, if you insist in sticking with the physical, remember the tedious efforts of the anon last year or so who shared his rare Japanese Super Mario guidebooks purely because they were fucking awesome. He asked nothing in return but our (You)'s and appreciation, of which he received many and much.

Even the shitposters here sometimes accidentally give good advice, or take mercy on someone who asks for help.

Anyway I recently discovered something cool. In 1985 Lucasart, then Lucas Films Games, created Habitat, the first known MMO. Developed for the Commodore 64 it was never officially released but a beta supposedly leaked in 1986. As of now there are plans to try to potentially get it back online.
