>10th Anniversary

someone actually spent 10 years of their life making these.

>I am asking the community for help here. There are two choices as far as where this hack can go.

>1) Traditional Bigger Badder Better Super Mario Bros. 3 hack that will beat the tar out of NHMFTDN2 in terms of offensive content but does not innovate. It would take the same approach as the first two hacks in that I wont give a fuck and will just vandalize the livong shit out of everything. Each Koopa Kid would be adapted into a celebrity penis that I mighy just get the community involved in designing a la megaman where I give the name and you guys could maybe draw it out to be converted into NES graphics. Dick #7 would be Hitlers Dick and the final boss would be someone that if you pay attention has been forshadowed a couple times already.

>2) MGS3 style prequel starring Hitlers Dick that would go into detail about why he exists and what his first mission as a Dick Nazi was. It would be a radical departure from the other two games just like MGS3 was to 1 and 2 and would also be a hack of a souped up less shitty version of Rambo. Rambo has lots of text so theres plenty of opportunity for wierd bullshit.

>MGS3 style prequel

How is this even a thing still?

It's senseless garbage with absolutely zero redeeming value. Go play a real ROM Hack and stop playing trash. End of story.

I'm tired of ROM Hackers spending 100's of hours retranslating games, creating new levels, and making new gameplay. Only to be left un noticed because other people are Loling at trash like Sonic XL and Headless Naked Mario.

Oh plz, I'll namefag for once. There are tons of high quality ASMings on RHDN that gets overshadowed by the "hundreds of hours" put into recoloring Mario Land 2, and the majority of high quality, not-menu-based RPG shit gets overshadowed by Pokemon while PokeCommunity still has a higher Alexa ranking than every ROM hax site.

The primary problem with this isn't the amount of feefees hurt by BHDN or anti-BHDN, it's the legality and unhelpful Programmer Cult that can barely string together proper ASM instructions or instructions for any of their fucking level editors and chronically treats themselves as gods for every little dumb thing they do.

Is it really this hard to comprehend why MUGEN gets more attention, including all the raper chars like Assault Abe & Kuromaru, than hax for any fighting game? How about the 200+ Zelda Classic "Quests" compared to the ~15 Zelda hax?

You're an unhelpful cult and probs always will be.

I get this sense in the games hacking community as well.

I randomly showed up because one hacker was working on a game I liked, got inspired and started a little project related to his, MIT licensed open source git repository and everything. I got respect for that; the hacker said he helped me because I seemed to be doing it for the right reasons, rather than just trying to one up him with a "better" program.

Here's a piece of advice sweetheart:
Stop telling me what to like or what to play. You can shove your condescending attitude where you know.

Sonic XL is a funny hack that serves as a fun gameplay challenge (avoiding rings) spinning a risk and reward mechanic around it. You equating it with the BHDN stuff means you think it is offensive and that's purely the single reason why you want no people to play it, and imply not so subtly its existence is a PROBLEM that "holds back" good stuff (TM).

Who feels upset about other people's success or fun? Who feels that someone somewhere you don't otherwise know is having a lol playing this? Salty jealous gossiping high school cliques, that's who. No amount of burgers or attention will satiate your thirst for your control boner over what other people do, like, or laugh at.

You know it takes a special kind of disingenuous asshole to start a thread about celebrating retro game hacks that's 90% about how they should be removed or politicized. Retro game HACKS, a medium all about SUBVERTING the original creative vision in variable ways, and YOU want to curtail it with rules and taboos.
It's incredibly telling you want to remove an interesting challenge hack (that's less obnoxious than the red rings or the omochao or boomed ones that instantly kill you or cause actual cringe impeding gameplay) because it doesn't pass your politics.

My honest opinion is that Sonic 2 XL, or any joke hack that pretends to be legitimate, are worse than B*** stuff. at least those subhuman insipid filthmongers have the decency to isolate themselves.

ROM Hacks exist to improve games, not turn them into sick, ableist jokes. They don't exist as vessels for dick jokes, your shitty fanfiction, your stupid creepypasta crap, or for any other reason but to IMPROVE games. ROM Hacks have a terrible reputation among the general public because of everything i just mentioned. How many people passed up on Dragoon X Omega or Super Mario 3Mix due to the stigma rom hacks have?
You and people like you are responsible for my mediums poor reputation.

So what I want to do is get the assembly code and label all the variables and label all the functions and ideally put a comment on every line of assembly to say what it does.

ROM hacks can exist without having to earn a seal of approval by anyone.
The whole concept of romhacks is doing modifications that are not normally allowed by the developers or the console. There's no ERSB or Sony or government agency or official mod shop to whine to, to get modifications removed. That's the beauty of it.

A thread on /vr/ won't cut it, I urge you to start a romhack site with your own rules here, where well crafted romhacks with lots of reprogramming and novel ideas and not shitty sprite swaps are rejected because your holiness rejected it.
Go full gears, you said ableist so hard type romhacks should be out too.

You want to create a ROM map. Basically, every byte in the game's ROM is used for something. Your task is to find what that is.

Radare2 should have 6502 code support, but I bet debugging emulators such as FCEUX will prove useful as well. Reverse engineering means developing a list of symbols. Symbols are names for memory addresses. As you can see in the 6502 debugger in the screenshot, you can have "address bookmarks".

Symbols can point at data or code. It's generally impossible to tell which is which without running the program (static analysis), that's why tracing code while it's running on the emulator (dynamic analysis) is important. You get a disassembly of code as it runs, and you'll be able to slowly figure out the patterns in the code. Using the code you'll be able to figure out what data it accesses and what it does with it. As you start to figure things out, the general structure of the game will become clear to you.

This thread is a perfect example of bullshit in the hobby.. Here you are, whining that some guy drew dicks on things.... meanwhile the same guy managed to redo all the levels, add some physics changes, and add in a timed jump scare. But its not enough because dicks.

A hacker adds a second player to The SNREW version of Final Fight Guy, and manages to get Cody working as well, but he's obviously not doing anything that requires talent.

A hacker completely overhauls Legend of Zelda, Gives it new music, new plot, new items, new overworld, new graphics for literally everything, and literally writes NES code in hex, but since you dont like his jokes he's not worth paying attention to.

Meanwhile we need to worry more about translating games with no text past the title screen, Translating black box games into Hungarian, and changing a characters gender pronouns because reasons.

You're all just jealous people pay attention to the funny shit.

Hey thanks for the reply.

You are correct, it is necessary to step through the code, and FCEUX allows this. Radare2 also allows stepping through the code I believe but obviously it doesn't emulate the PPU so you can't really see what the game is doing.

I began stepping through the code and making notes but what I want is a tool that can spit out the annotated code. For example if I find out that memory address 0x4040 is used for the player's health, I want to label it as a symbol and for the tool to update any other references to that memory address in the code listing to use that symbol. If I find out that a certain address in the ROM is the beginning of a routine that does handles hit detection, I want to label it, so that anywhere there is a jump to that location the label is used. And I want to step through the code and be able to annote the code as I go, so that I can spit out the annotated code into a text file in the end.

Fceux is an essential tool for this but it doesn't seem to have the annotation feature that I need. Maybe I need to create a plugin for Fceux.

Who the shit even are you, then, if you're so important? You can't be both anonymous, AND the baddest ass, most important hacker ever.

You aren't the fucking Banksy of ROM hacks.

>tool that can spit out the annotated code.
>For example if I find out that memory address 0x4040 is used for the player's health, I want to label it as a symbol and for the tool to update any other references to that memory address in the code listing to use that symbol

That's a feature of interactive debugging. The software helps you figure out new data by displaying the data you've already discovered. This involves saving and loading all the symbols (name/address pairs) you've created and showing the name whenever the address comes up. This is extremely valuable for NES games because they aren't very dynamic; there's no memory allocation or anything even remotely like that.

FCEUX should have this capability, as should Radare2.

I'm a programmer myself and my hacks are mostly bug fixes for my favorite games. There are people on RHDN that objectively improve games by removing shitty mechanics and adding new features. They give these games a new life. In order to do this, you need taste. You need to like your favorite games enough to know what's wrong with them, and you need to know how to fix those problems.

You could say taste is the one thing these "bad hacks" people lack, but then again they often aren't fixing and improving their favorite games to begin with. They're not making hacks like Sonic 3 Complete.

The only tools to hack arcade games are hex editors and DOS art editing programs.
Add this to the fact that the games I want to hack throw a shitfit and halt on copy protection when certain things are touched, and having to make sure I don't overwrite the original romset when I want to swap out to the hacked on in MAME, and the process of reaching the final product becomes tedious and painful.
I don't even know how to share the shit I've made because of the nature of MAME's romsets being a bunch of mini-roms packed into a zip file. I can't just release a single patch on the usual sites.
Lucky spoiled console pricks.

>The only tools to hack arcade games are

You're expected to create your tools yourself. You want an interactive editor for every single game, don't you? That shit only happens in specific communities for popular games like Mario/Sonic, and only because skilled reverse engineers managed to figure out the structure of the game, its stages, its graphics and shit. That task is way too hard for the common ROM "hacker", if the term can even be applied to such people. They're more like lusers using programs other people made.

>I don't even know how to share the shit I've made because of the nature of MAME's romsets being a bunch of mini-roms packed into a zip file. I can't just release a single patch on the usual sites.

I admit I'm not skilled enough to program stuff from scratch, but I at least know how to search for bytes and edit them properly, so maybe there's hope for me to learn one day.
I'd kill for someone to make a native Windows/Linux port of Turaco, or AGE, so I don't have to open DOSBox every time I want to change the way something looks.

Wow. How many games does this support anyway? The screenshot shows pacman. Here's a complete, commented disassembly of the entire game:

http://cubeman.org/arcade-source/pacman.asm

Figure out how the game stores graphics and make a program to edit that. Games that are old enough might even use literal 1 bit/pixel bit maps. I've read about boards that had literally hardwired graphics -- they had a matrix of wires and that literally resembled the shape of the sprite and which could be modified by shorting or connecting the wires you want to mean 0 or 1.

It's one thing that many of you passively admit 90% of all hacks are shit, but then make the case that this makes badhacks an exception of extra shit cuz it hurts your pathetic feefees like GoodSet does, which is the only thing ensuring actual archival cuz the rest of you are lazy as fuck.
How much does it piss you off knowing this is in NonGood?
http://www.dlsite.com/ecchi-eng/work/=/product_id/RE193852.html

GoodSet > BHDN > RHDN

I do like how BlueMaxima set up that Flash preservation thing that has like 500+ people in the Discord whereas they intend to archive everything, including all the RAYCISS & SECKSISS Flash gaemz out there, and, ya know, being overall far more useful than you cowards that don't help with shit.

"Oh, let's gib money to Nightcrawler cuz he'll always be here with his site's shitty connection speeds!1"

I don't really care if either BHDN or RHDN goes down tomorrow, cuz GoodSet/NonGood-tier packs will outlast either of you fuckwads. So hard to make a site rip, init?

>>4960538
Yes, also drama happens. Luckily you don't really have to deal with it much. Then again, there are plenty of things you have to deal with and the general consensus seems to be that if you let something dissuade you, it's ok because there would be many more frustrations that you would have run in to. After all figuring it out is the cornerstone of hacking.

All hacks have value. Maybe some don't have very much, but there is no reason for hate.
I started playing the most recent Secret Of Mana gameplay improvement, and it is excellent. However the scroll fix hack like night and day. You're no longer pushing against the edge of the screen and you can see where your going.
