Explain this, /vr/. The game in pic related - a lewd strip mahjong game - rips off stuffs from the comics Big Two - and the creator of the game gets away with it.

Rip-offs and "bland name products" in retro vidya thread, I guess.

Pic related to OP, now go compare with it.

(Something that's funny in the game in this picture is that there is an arcade cabinet that Castle/Fury could destroy at the very start of the first stage. A "take that" to the game in the OP, I guess? That sounds unlikely though.)

From what I can tell, Japanese copyright laws are... odd. There's a lot of ripping off going on that just goes unchecked because reasons. Add to that that the game never saw a western release, and it could have just as well been that the Big Two either didn't care or didn't know.

>> No.2473621

I think the most famous example of all this might be Revenge of Shinobi. The original version had blatant rip-offs of Spider-Man, Batman, Terminator, Hulk, Rambo, Godzilla and maybe one or two others that I'm forgetting.

Derp.

There's actually four different versions of the game in America, Sega eventually picked up the Spiderman license in 1990 and added him back in the game. He was removed later when the VC version was released.

Nichibutsu had a history of ripping off Western pop culture imports and getting wiminz to model in pink-like leotards for flyers. They also did Crazy Climber, Terra Cresta, and UFO Robot Dangar, so all's forgiven.

Here's those from Drift Out, the 1991 top down rally game that preceded Neo Drift Out. Look at the deliberate misspellings of drivers and car names.

I'm disappointed they didn't changed it back to a shapeshifter in the VC version. It makes no sense for Fake Spider-Man and Fake Batman to be separate characters anymore.

I feel like it's not just the japanese, copyright laws as a whole were a lot more lenient in the early 90s. Now with the internet we get entire companies who make a living from tracking down stuff like this.

There was a Nichibutsu thread a few months ago, and it's crazy the amount of rip-offs these guys created. Pic related : not Sailor Moon

As far as sports game are concerned, it seemed pretty common to use misspellings of famous sportsmen. I remember Tennis Ace using some (Y. Nova, I. Lender, J. Conner) and even PES

Not only did they remove Batman and Spiderman in the later releases, but they also removed Godzilla, and replaced him with a metal skeleton dragon, and if you notice closely, the ninja on the title screen is modeled after Sonny Chiba., and they removed him in faver of a generic ninja in the VC release as well.
