I spent all week playing this game.

For those of you who've experience with Wizardry 4... how the fuck do I get past the first floor?

I can handle the piss-ant adventurers just fine. I can beat the Guardians just fine.

But then there are two groups of patrols near the door in the third (or maybe it was the fourth) square-hallway... named-groups of 4-6 adventurers, many with over 20 hit points. I can run from them, but it pushes me back a square and I simply encounter them again 100% of the time moving forward after that. I tried going around the square to reach the door from the other side, but another patrol-group of similar difficulty is waiting for me. I even made sure to go all the way back to the pentagram to re-summon a fresh batch of monsters, but most of them have an uncanny habit of running away like cowards or dying to one hit.

I'm no newbie to the Wizardry series at all, but with this game I felt like the designers personally broke into my apartment, tied me to the toilet, and filled my ass with lava-hot elephant cum and dragon dildos by the time the weekend ended.

Yes, I mad.

I played it some more this evening and got a lot further with these monsters:

* The Coin thingies (they summon other coins, and have 1HP breath attacks... so 9 of these using a breath attack against enemies wipes out most encounters)
* The Zombie... turns out they paralyze on hitting an enemy sometimes, and have better aim than the fucking Orc
* Lv 1 Priest ... because it's required

I actually made it to the Third Guardian this time... but on the first turn, before I could do ANYTHING, he got the first move and instantly casted Mahalito. Immediate Game Over screen.

Yes, Wizardry 4 was made to be ridiculously hard with only a slim chance to clear each level.
What pissed me off the most was how much it depended on the RNG. You have to constantly reroll your party even though Trebor is on your back. And how you have no control over your party so even casting MILWA becomes a complex undertaking.
I may play the simplified PCE/PS1 versions instead.

Now imagine how fun it gets once you encounter high level ninjas and mages.

It sounds like save states are mandatory for this game...

Why not just play a different game? Who are you trying to fool by claiming you beat Wizardry 4 by cheating your way through?

I know, that is a novel concept for /vr/, but still

I don't you think can have fun in Wizardry 4 unless you are an extreme masochist.
You'd end up constantly reloading for every single step you make.

I went into it euphorically because I had cleared Wizardry 1-3 without real issues and quickly came to the realization that I am merely a mortal.

>> No.1634034

There's really no excuse for this level of inflated difficulty. I can't imagine anyone has ever found it fun... did they even play test the thing?

The point was to silence the people demanding greater difficulty.

It's like trying to somehow make a bad movie more enjoyable by skipping most of it and just watching the credits.

Save states isn't much trouble for me, it's just hitting a function key. I'd have to play the Apple II version though, since I don't think dosbox can do save states. But it doesn't matter, the graphics are probably identical...

I hope they were happy with their bullshit insane levels of difficulty then.

DOSbox has save states, at least the SVN builds.
I'd generally recommend getting the PC98 for higher resolution text or PS1 for nicer graphics. Gameplay is identical between all versions save for the PCE-CD and the alternate mode on the PS1 (which both are only partially in English).

No, more like skipping a bunch of boring action and getting to the credits. Because that's exactly what you're proposing to do.

What action? There is nothing in the game aside from frustrating encounters.

A lot of RPGs are like that. I'll just skip the part about dying and starting from scratch, since this game sounds more deadly than most.

>> No.1634075

>>1634073
Wizardry 4 actually gives you the option to save your progress so you don't necessarily have to start from scratch.
Give it a try if you think you can make it fun with savestates but you'll be wasting your time.
Wizardry 4 is not a normal RPG so don't expect it to be.

Finally made it to the second floor.

Third Guardian is pretty much all luck, but after that I discovered a second pentagram on the outer hallway of the first floor which means I can quit+save and re-summon without having to re-do that shit and only fight a handful of adventurers and the Pyramid Guard to get to level 2. Also like a retard I didn't know Q was the proper key to quit, not ALT-X (which just dumps you back to DOS without saving your progress)

And unlike Wizardry 1-3, permadeath isn't a thing. No, instead, Wizardry 4's equivalent is to tempt you into doing a Quit+Save at the worst possible places, as it respawns all enemies, patrols, and bosses... knowing the right places to quit-and-save seems to be just as much a part of the game's many challenges.

But, I'm feeling it. I *know* I can beat this game with enough perseverance. That's what Arino-san would want me to do.

I cleared the start floor after I saw the second pentagram on a map.
I had beaten the third guardian several times but it had always cost me one of my groups so I tried to head back to summon replacements which usually ended with me getting killed along the way or Trebor catching up.
After I knew where the pentagram was I could just save after the guardian and inch my way toward the pentagram, regularly saving along the way whenever I made progress without losses. Without that knowledge it would just have been wasteful guesswork instead of trying to defeat the fourth guardian.
I don't see saving in the wrong place as a problem since you get 10 slots.

Yeah, RPGs don't work well on youtube, aside from showing specific parts of the game.

That link might also help the OP a bit, if he wants it.
