Karnov - 111 votes.

I'll be starting the Karnov translation this week.

I just posted this in the last thread but Japanese file-sharing is primarily through two programs named Share and Perfect Dark. There's also a third, older one named Winny, but I'm not sure how much that is used anymore. I would check those if you haven't.

Here's what he said about how to search for .ts streams on it:

A. Search
- PD has one of the most comprehensive search engines available with a P2P. Based upon tree searching, you basically fine anything you want and filter out all the crap. Use it right and you can score a gold mine. The best way to search is to set it up with a main category and then break it down from there

IE:

.ts -> ドラマ
ドラマ -> 花ざかりの君たちへ
アニメ → ドラゴンボール

I would think that "drama" is referring to the genre the show is listed under, not the file type. I know nothing about the site, so I could be wrong.

>> No.1003825

>>1003814
>.ts -> ドラマ

What this means is that ドラマ is a subcategory of .ts. You're searching first for .ts, then searching within the .ts results for ドラマ, as there would be other types of .ts files than drama shows.

>> No.1003831

>>1003825
So, if you just wanted to look at all of the .ts results, you'd just search for .ts. The example was showing how to look at .ts results that were specifically drama shows. Take the third example, Anime. The main category is anime, and then you would search within anime for Dragonball.

He made it confusing because above that is a long explanation of why you shouldn't search for dramas on Perfect Dark since it's mostly otaku stuff (only drama is 24 episodes).

Since you're so wrong

Transport stream (TS) is specified in MPEG-2, and it is a standard format for transmission and storage of audio, video, and data, and is used in broadcast systems such as DVB and ATSC. Transport stream specifies a container format encapsulating packetized streams, with error correction and stream synchronization features for maintaining transmission integrity when the signal is degraded.

The connection of Transport Stream to Program Stream is as follows. Firstly, PS is designed for reasonably reliable media, such as disks (like DVDs), while TS is designed for less reliable transmission, namely broadcast. Further, Transport Stream transmissions may carry multiple Program Streams.

I'll just assume that the DVDs may have Japanese subtitles. Episode-per-disc information is needed since most DVD episodes have been translated. 720p rips are still most likely preferable.

Included in this directory is the SFV file for the video and an NFO file containing the video's information in Media Player Classic. The video is segmented into 50,000,000 byte RAR files, old file naming convention, with 10% PAR2 parity files as per newsgroup upload standards. This is how the internet is done. If you have corruption problems as has been mentioned, you can confirm which RARs are bad with the PAR2 files, fix them with them if it's just a little bit, and download replacement RARs if it's bad.

I think the International Date Line makes it a different date depending on where you are in the world. It's a direct rip from cable though, over component cables, YUV colorspace, with the commercials included (McDonalds is different there).

It's not 60 fps, but some normal 720p MP4s are. It's incredible to see the Chief move like he's right there in the room with you. The Mario Challenge Series Special is an example of this, at only 900 MB and exactly an hour and a half. Japanese are quite adept at video encoding.

Perfect Dark is also impressing me. Essentially a 2chan collective project like these translations, it became one of the top p2p programs. Built by Japanese, for Japanese. It's striking how exclusive the content is on here...it's meant for chan-types with Japanese interests. It's meant for the Japanese.

It can vary wildly, depending on the priorities of the various groups and their amounts of free time. The largest group (SA) has been busy with professional work this summer, so their releases have been few and far between. They've had periods in the past where they would release two episodes in a week. We're hoping that they can return to that sort of pace after the summer, but quality should still trump quantity. If you're looking for a specific episode to be translated, I can't really give you an accurate answer.

Does anybody know if the subbed travelogue was an extended version from another broadcast or maybe a DVD bonus, or is the version on DM a SHORTENED special for some reason? I haven't found any other details about it.

>Game Center CX 42 Hour Special (2009 new year's special) - broadcast December 29th, 2009
Can anybody find additional details on this? I'd like to know more about it before deciding on a designation.

1. What was the exact start time? If it actually lasted 42 hours, it probably spanned three separate dates.
2. Were any games played? Was there an official challenge?
3. Were there any special segments? Was it mostly a clip show?

Wikipedia says December 29th, 6AM to December 30th, 11PM, so it wasn't QUITE 48 hours long.

>2. Were any games played? Was there an official challenge?
>3. Were there any special segments? Was it mostly a clip show?

According to Wikipedia, it was primarily reruns of the following:
*The full version of the 2008 holiday special
*All episodes from season 11
*The first 4 episodes of season 12 (at this point, 5 episodes from this season had been shown)
*The 24 Hour Lemmings live challenge

Presumably there was some other new material, too.

Don't worry about adding new things, that's the point. Gives me more targets. The SPR 10 minute special is clearly new content, even if it's just new narration.

The 42 hour special doesn't seem like there would be much new other than intros and outros, promotional things and such. 24 hours was the lemmings challenge, and the other half was the episodes from season 11 and 12. You can confirm by adding up 24 hours + the runtime of season 11 + first 4 of season 12.

This program is of quality. You really get an experience in Japanese culture by using it. Rather than sharing being maintained by means of calling people names and ratio shaming in public in the comments like with torrents, shame is employed in a Japanese manner with the program. It will catch you deleting things from your Unity folder, wherein you share files while having no idea what's in them. Rather than hamper or limit you, it will allow you to know that the program has detected your deceit. I assume one is supposed to feel a private, Japanese-flavored shame, and change their ways accordingly.

Who cares what a couple of troublemakers think? It's perfectly proper to use a trip for verification. It's less confusing when editing and lets people know that it's not some anonymous prankster delivering malware. You don't have to use it all the time, but you DO need to use it for EVERYTHING relating to subbing.

It's also how I converted the original Karnov FLV to an MP4. It could have easily been made into an AVI...but first I tried to make it into an MKV and it really hurt the performance. So while it was still lossless, it played poorly in practice. Make sure you test it.

NOT using your trip in posts like that is far more likely to piss people off, since it can be hard to see if they're talking to someone with actual authority over the sub or just some random anon. Use it, and people won't have to play dumb guessing games with you all the time.

>> No.1008235

It just makes someone an easier target when they have a name. People can't lash out at anonymous posters, but when they constantly see Abunai and Kakaricho, and then have a beef, they flip out.

Don't take it personally if you can. Remember when someone came in with a unique identifying name? Poopz? People saw someone saying something that didn't jive with what they liked, and he has this weird fecal name...they reported him so hard he was banned.

The think that the person with the e-cred comment had in mind was that you weren't using your trip for actual purposes as per >>1008187 and >>1008206

You had used it in a simple attempt to utilize your established credibility and persona as a means to effect a change in opinion. If that opinion was taken up by the board as a whole, it would have been detrimental to everyone's efforts -- including your own.

To discourage an active poster of 60 fps / 720p / previously unseen special episode raws from acquiring and making such content public can only hurt subbing efforts in the future. You had been the one who said high quality episodes increased your desire to sub. This did not jive with what you'd said under your identity before...it wasn't a time for the tripcode.

It was an attempt to use your trip identity as a way to stop dissemination of new content. This attempt had to be neutralized. You must not take it personally though. You exercise rare skill in the execution of your efforts thus far and are to be commended, not driven into anonymity.

Further "drama" is of no use so I'll make this plain. You are attempting to stop translation efforts. No one's hanging out on IRC, no one even hangs out to watch streaming GCCX together. Half the so-called drama going on right now is just people bitching about drama, or stuff that happened weeks ago, and none of it really has much to do with VR-GCCX or the subbing effort as a whole, and I certainly haven't seen any of this "attention whoring" behaviour.

Those are queued but frozen along with the rest of the queue right now. One of the extended holiday specials almost finished then stopped around 86% for now.

If it stays like this I'll clear out more room from the "unity" folder and queue up something like all 24 hours of a famous live challenge. They're timestamped so you know you're getting a complete set. Whether or not they'll start to download is another question.

Yeah, the line is 一揆 三機しかないのかー "Ikki sanki shikanai no ka"

Ikki written as 一揆 means "uprising", while written as 一機 it'd mean "one life", with sanki (三機) obviously meaning "three lives".

Literally, he's saying "You only get 3 lives in Ikki?", but he's obviously punning on the title, which a translation must take into account.
There's a couple other jokes on how 一揆 and 一機 are pronounced the same way later on in the episode, too.

To make it easier. Screen text is almost all of the time correct, so I input all of the screen text before the episode, so I don't have to do it in the middle of the episode. And because of my other request.

About the episode, it's a episode I've always wanted to see it subbed, but It doesn't seem that it's going to be anytime soon. The episode I've been talking since I started subbing: Jake Hunter. Or Detective Saburou Jinguuji: Shinjuku Central Park Murder Mystery for the full japanese name. Detective episodes were always fun, so I think this may be too. And the screen text being on a different pastebin. You said this episode is text heavy because of the game, so doing all the screen text before hand would make my job easier to when the script is done.

>The episode after Karnov, I'd like to choose the episode myself.
Personally, I feel that if the team is going to use the threads for editing, they should also ask the threads about which episodes to sub next. I understand that everyone is going to have their own pet projects and that the translator and subber need to be motivated enough to stay interested in each one, but letting only one or two people decide what to sub is how we end up with stuff like SA's Mito Koumon: an episode beloved by the translators and subbers but boring to the majority of other people.

These questions should be the priorities for the team:

- Can the raw be located in high quality?

- Is the episode reasonably easy to translate and sub?

- Does the choice of episode have the support of the majority of the community?

Just because those small parts of the episodes so far have been relatively free of errors doesn't mean that there won't be errors in the future. The entire script should be one document. Maybe new scripts should be done on Google Docs instead of Pastebin. That would allow you guys to get a little fancier with italics and boldface, and you could highlight different types of lines in the scripts to make them easier to locate and isolate.

There's also a logical error at 24:38, where Sasano congratulates Arino on the birth of his "akachan", which the subtitles translate as "daughter", and then go on to refer to her as "she". This would normally be a fine translation, if not for the fact that 10 seconds later, he ascertains if it's a girl or not. In Japanese, he's been gender-neutral up to that point, but the line is just weird in the subs when he's been referring to her as Arino's daughter and "she" a dozen times already.

Also, the entire exchange at 20:40-20:50 is a whole bunch of nonsense in the subs. Yeah, I know, there's puns at work, but it's still really hard to make sense of if you don't understand enough Japanese to pick up on the point through the audio.

I googled Jake Hunter and found out it's three games got an English remake on the DS. This is a bit of a difficulty if there's no one here who's familiar with the games, as it seems they were (IMO) over-localized (Shinjuku, Tokyo is changed to Aspico, USA, etc).

Abunai, you seem to like the franchise, so out of curiosity, would you rather the translation be faithful to the localized games, or to the original Famicon disk system that Arino plays?

Very good points, and ones I was thinking of implementing the next new project.

>>1009663
I'll keep them in the main script as well, they need to be checked after all. I was mulling whether to move to Google Docs as well, do they have line counts like pastebin?

Damn it, I meant to ask how familiar people were with the original Gundam series and if a reference to it would be understood. Sloppiness on my part, and I'm sorry for it.

The newspaper article article around the 09:00 mark says that it was a girl, and seeing as Sasano works on the show with Arino, it's a pretty fair assumption he knows it's a girl. I'm pretty certain it was a scripted joke when he ascertains it was a girl, as Arino just said she looks like him under the nose.

How is the 20:40-20:50 bit a mess? It's grammatically correct and I think it gets the joke about Ikki/one life across pretty well.

I don't think there's any need to leave out a reference, even if nobody gets it. Puns I can see if it would be too difficult to come up with something that would still fit in context, but there's no language barrier to allusion.

You can do all kinds of fancy stuff. I haven't dug too deep, but you can just sign in with your gmail account and look around. The simplest way to use line numbers might be just to type your script in spreadsheet format. You could put the speaker in a small column on the left, then the line spoken can go in a wide column next to that. Try logging in and experimenting a little with it.

The only exception I've seen is when SA will localize the Chief's reference to a Japanese game show if it has been repackaged and aired in America, as he's done with MXC and Ninja Warrior in the past. Otherwise the reference is left intact and people can research it if they want. I think the MXC localization included a note.

Arino's pretend confusion and Sasano's emphasis don't really come across at all in the subs, so the joke will be lost on people who either don't know what Ikki means in Japanese or aren't listening carefully or both. There may not be a better way to say/translate it without killing the joke, but some kind of emphasis in the subs might have helped.

The "Game Center CX in U.S.A. DVD" section of the OP episode guide should be changed to something like:

Disc 1 - GCCX in USA and The Chief Talks About Hollywood

Disc 2 - Zombie Nation, Dynamite Deka (Die Hard Arcade), The Character in My Head

That would be more accurate right?

It would be nice if it became a norm. Just like clover did. And about the timing, put it by minutes, seconds if needed. I should be able to find it.

>Abunai, you seem to like the franchise, so out of curiosity, would you rather the translation be faithful to the localized games, or to the original Famicon disk system that Arino plays?
I loved how they handled the localization, so I'd go with the terms of the localization.

>>1009642
>- Is the episode reasonably easy to translate and sub?
Sub? I don't think so. Translate? I don't know.

>- Can the raw be located in high quality?
This was the highest I could find on youtube and the likes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cfJwx_D-iQ

>- Does the choice of episode have the support of the majority of the community?
I don't know, we'll have to see.

Arino's New Year's live Kirby Challenge...12 hours exactly? Starts with Toujima dressed in a blue shirt and jeans? Has Arino playing that blue Konami machine that mysteriously appeared in the studio at 2 ½ hour point...Hama shows up in the second video at around the 6 hour point.

Does 12 hours sound right or is there an Extended Rebroadcast with 3¼ minutes extra footage that I need?

At the bottom of the section it says
>Only exclusive content is listed.
Should we break down each of the sets into all of the challenges and segments on each disc? That might get kind of cluttered and redundant. Maybe OP can test it out to see how it looks.

Like I said before, the only copy of #134 on PerfectDark is a small .swf file that was probably recorded off of that very YouTube, or may at best be its source. A quality copy of this episode will re-air in the future on one of Fuji's networks and will be uploaded in Japan. It doesn't exist right now that I can find.

If you know any terms that would appear in it that I've overlooked I can try those, but be sure to check the FTP as there is now an abundance of high quality material for you to review.

He wasn't asking you those three questions. He was saying that the team needs to consider those three things before deciding what to sub every time. Please use your trip when discussing these things. This is getting to be more than a bit of a hassle.

He's being a madman the whole time, as usual. Like the pastebin says, it's the New Years Special followed by him and Hama challenging Kirby Super Star. I've seen a lot of people express interest in this in past threads, and no translation or compilation has been released.

It looks like the episodes are split into a New Year's Special and then the Kirby Challenge proper...should I distinguish them or RAR them up together and label it as the New Year's Special plus Kirby Challenge live?

Is there a clean break between the two, or does it transition right from one special into the other?

The Kindle book has them together under one listing, although it mentions that it's technically two specials and breaks the major points down minute by minute. It looks like there is a clean break between the first five hours and the next seven. So to answer your question, I don't really know. I guess it won't hurt to keep them together with a clear title, since most people are used to referring to them as one long special.

Looks like they plotted out the broadcast as a 5 hour New Year's Special, which concludes with Arino doing karaoke with Kibe and then Nakayama, as scenes from the last 5 hours are played along with memories from the year that were highlighted throughout the episode.

Then part 2 sees Arino and Nakayama bow, and immediately Hama shows up and welcomes us to GameCenter CX wearing a Kacho uniform. Seems like a clean break, I assume Arino is making his way over now. He's all set up in a different studio.

I'll do it in two parts with the same New Year's title but distinct subtitles like New Year's Special and then Kirby Superstar Yoiko challenge or whatever. But will list the New Year's Special as Pt 1 of 2 and the challenge as Pt 2 of 2
