Here's my situation. I enjoy the shooting/platforming mechanics in SNES/GBA Metroids a lot, but find the 'bomb-a-random-tile-to-proceed' mechanic off-putting. Still, I played through these games several times already.

What other similar 2D shooters/platformers are out there (preferrably with diagonal shooting)? I played Vectorman/2 a lot back in the day and it's kinda what I'm looking for, but I wish there were more weapons/upgrades.

Straight-up shooters like Gunstar Heroes/Alien Soldier/Contra where you simply proceed in a single direction while shooting tons of enemies are a no-no. There has to be some platforming/exploration in addition to the shooting.

>> No.999051

Mega Man is the obvious answer. No diagonal shooting most of the time, but other than that it fits.

The later MM games, 4 and beyond. 1-3 are core MM games. Run, jump, and shoot. Even then, if I remember correctly 6 is the only NES one that actively promotes exploring with different weapons.

[spolier]Cave Story[/spoiler], although no diag. shooting.

I'll be hanging myself now.

It sure does. I especially enjoyed the ZX series on the DS a lot. Demon's Crest on the SNES is another great game, in many ways similar to ZX, but more old-school.

zero missions tile bombing isn't really random
Its one of the easiest metroid games to navigate.
The game will literally tell you where to go 90% of the time and most of the bomb puzzles were really obvious

Turrican series

One of those should give you the platform n' gun experience you're after.

Not quite retro, but Bunny Must Die for PC is great. I'd fully recommend it. It's not as good as Super Metroid, but less "Find the secret entrance". Lots of different weapons, but you can only use one at a time, and they drop from lamps you destroy. You get time powers that get better and better and do more things.

Made me think of Metroid Fusion. Consider that too.

Isn't Turrican just a Contra clone?

>> No.1001504

>>1001482
Nope, it has quite a few distinct differences and has a slightly slower pace.

Also stay away from earthworm jim. I'm a huge fan of 2d Shooters but i think design-wise it's pretty awful.

Turrican is like playing Metroid and Contra at the same time.

>> No.1001581

Castlevania: SOTN isn't a shooting game, but you'd probably like it anyway.

>> No.1002091

Anymore suggestions? There must be something else apart from Metroid and Vectorman with diagonal shooting, lots of platforming and decent production values. Lack of diagonal shooting usually means no interesting aerial enemies.

As for Earthworm Jim, I played the both games to death as a kid, but I agree it's not very balanced and more of a joke/gimmick game.

You can try the Gunforce games, but they're not very polished.

>> No.1002129

Turrican (any of them), including Universal Soldier for Genesis, which is just a Turrican 2 reskin.

Skip Gunforce 1. Gunforce 2 is awesome and is almost a predecessor to Metal Slug!

just a heads up, a group tried to localize and sell bunny msut die, but made a lot of weird changes. like changing the cat boss and replaced all the music. im wondering if the whole thing was even legal.

Thanks! Will look into it.

More obscure games, please.

Phantom 2040 is supposed to be quite good, you find secrets and alternate endings by grappling around and such, though I've never played it, just saw a bit of gameplay and put it on the massive fucking list of games I might play some day.

Truth to be told, playing SotN directly after the GBA Metroids was a huge disappointment. Alucard moves so god damn slow, and all the action amounts to slashing each enemy repeatedly with a sword at point-blank range.

So wait, that wasn't related to the people who made it?
Is that version in the Steam greenlight?
I played the japanese translated one which I thought was free, but have been told there's no legal free version.

>> No.1003781

>>1002765
yeah thats the version on greenlight. you can see the edited cat boss in the previews and everything. it comes with 2 ost options, and the original ost is clearly altered to sound different. I wonder if they stole it
