Has there ever been another (non-rhythm) game in history whose soundtrack is more "married to" the game, and vice-versa? What I mean is, Katamari Damashii's soundtrack was more or less purpose-made for this game, and this game alone, and the game would legitimately suffer without it.

Aren't most soundtracks "purpose-made" for a game? I'm not sure I understand this question.

for me this game is the face of the PS2

Maybe the Ace Combat series? Namco generally has really good soundtracks.

Rayforce and Ikaruga have OSTs that are synchronized with the levels down to a second. Very cool.

first time I got a job working on an indie game I made music that the devs liked, and thought fit the game, but when the game came out the majority of players said it was totally unfitting, but they still admitted to enjoying it a lot.

This is it.
After playing earthbound, the sounds from it hit you on a primal level.
Also Link's Awakening (the original version) has the Ballad of the Wind Fish that is a core part of what the game is.

Yes, such soundtracks that fit the game so much that they added an extra dimension to it, they existed far before Katamari.

This too.

And on consoles I'd say Thunder Force IV and Streets of Rage 2.

This choice is sure to be unorthodox, but I can't think of any other game soundtrack that uses a capella.

Not sure if this what you meant but Sega NiGHTS has interactive soundtrack based on your action toward little "nightopian" creatures in each level. If you traumatised them the game music gets darker and if you feed & breed them the music gets more uplifting. These changes persist over multiple replays of the game. The full genius of this system is not apparent unless you own Christmas NiGHTS which provides a music track editor that enables you to hear all the different variations of each level's theme.

Tons actually, stuff Sonic Adventure and Persona 4 would be incomplete without them. There's also the newer Doom games whose soundtrack adapts to the gameplay. Can't think of any /vr/ ones that do, though.

I feel like Katamari Damacy is both a great game and also something I wish everyone would just shut the fuck up about already. Can public discourse move on to Chulip or something? Maybe we can try to get a Dokodemo Issho translation? Nobody...?

The Tony Hawk games. They beat all other licensed soundtracks out, easily. There are other games that people will pick songs from and still remember years later, but not on the same level.
