That is an issue with all disc based systems eventually the lasers will die and the number of replacements will begin to dry up. it is a bit worse that cart based platforms but all systems will eventually die and be un-repairable.

it has two lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs. there are two potentiometers for each that controls the voltage. usually the DVD gets weak over time. you can extend the life of the laser by upping the voltage. you have to be extremely careful, though, or you kill the laser. google how to do it. this is how we revived PS2s in the used vidya shop i worked at ages ago.

There's no reason not to double or even triple dip on older systems. PS2 sold over 150m units. While a large portion of that number were normies who got it for the dvd drive, and thus it's reasonable to assume there's a disgusting amount of systems in landfills, there's still a metric fuckton of systems in the wild. Same for the DS. Same for the Wii. Do some calculations and save up for a few months to equip yourself with a comfortable amount of usable systems and backups for parts. Hell, get an i.link multiplayer setup going if you take it that far.

It's better for loading games if you also get a (admitted dirt cheap) IDE to SATA connector, throw a 2.5" SSD in that bitch, and go to town.
There's a few games, I think mostly jap ones, that benefit directly from having a ps2 HDD installed, but most don't. SSD helps because, well, duh.

You are running the games off the memory card faster than running it off a USB and you don't need a working laser. The only better way would be running it off a HHD, but slim PS2's can't use those.

Depending on the game, popstarter is outright perfect, especially with recent fixes. Most of the issues people have with popstarter come from the shitty PS2-Home fork of OPL e-celebs shill despite being severely outdated and broken

Anyone telling you to use a hdd and opl/popstarter is retarded and should be disregarded.

The games have a million and one issues on both, might as well use an emulator, it will probably cause less trouble.

The way to go for ps1 is Mechapwn - burn taiyo yuden jvc cd-r, and for ps2 freedvdboot and verbatim azos. The games work like the original discs this way, perfect.

carefully remove and tape the screws to a paper sheet for storage

remove all dust and crud from that metal rod i circled
the ps2 slims suck dust bunnies directly onto the laser assembly and cause disc read errors and fuckups

then try a cdr game like mvc2 then try a more data intensive game on dvd

dont use cleaners or alcohol

Any PC from the last 10 years will do just fine at PS2 emulation, and if you have a decent GPU you can set really crispy resolutions. Even PC handhelds can emulate PS2 well since like 5 years ago.
