Do you think shmups would be more popular if more of them let you control the scrolling speed? It certainly does add an interesting layer of strategy. What are some other game mechanics that are surprisingly uncommon to find in a game?

Top down shmups basically do this, but they don't seem as popular as stuff like Gradius and Darius to me. Pocky and Rocky seems to be the gold standard for this style but there are plenty of others that do it.

There needs to be more working Shmups where the player's ship can be directly customized, allowing for things more durability to damage, letting weapons be upgraded once or twice.
Too many Shmups have you die after 1 or two hits without a force field.
