Time to discuss the fun machine.
There was a thread some time ago about Bluetooth adapters for the N64 so you can use any BT Controller (Switch Pro, PS4, Xbone etc...), mine just arrived today and I can say that it works great and I don't feel any input lag at all.
Anyways, I'll be playing Space Station Silicon Valley again, how about you?

N64 was easily Nintendo's worst console. Outside of multiplayer games there is no reason to own this. It's a lot like the 32x, cartridge based with no games. A shame really.

recently I played some Mario tennis, I can't remember if you can use cheat codes to unlock everything or not, hut I hope that the answer is yes because fuck me, I don't have my old save and this game has too much shit to unlock. I don't want to run the full tournaments for every character again.

Only other goal is to someday beat goldeneye on 00 agent. I'm stuck on the train right now just for taking too many stray hits as I clear in. The akimbo fuckers and the train exit at the end can eat my ass.

64 was fine in its day but the people who still blabber about it today are the weirdest, ugliest, manbaby circus freaks. It's always the humpty dumpty looking mother fucker with a big fat pregnancy gut, being held up by some tiny little noodle legs, with his 5XL waifu t-shirt, blue hair, and a funco pop collection, that never stops blabbering about mediocre shit like mario kart 64 and Goldeneye. The ps1 and saturn guys meanwhile are always normal looking mechanical engineers and the like, who are enthusiastic about all how there's always another weird experimental ps1 game hiding under a rock somewhere.

It's no 32X but it's definitely Nintendo's most poorly aged system with a pretty dreadful library once you get past the Nintendo and Rare stuff. Alright, the AKI wrestling games, Ogre Battle 64 and the Goemon games all fucking rule. I'd probably take it over the WiiU.

>> No.9967791

The N64 produces weird nostalgic reactions out of people, even more so than other Nintendo systems, and I can't really figure out why. First 3D games? The multiplayer? The fact that there was only a handful of good games a year so you were stuck playing those over and over?

Nostalgia is the right word. If you grew up with an N64 or knew people who had one it was basically the party machine of its time period. Mario Party, Smash Bros, Mario Kart were all widely enjoyed by kids everywhere, and that's not even counting Rare's titles like the Banjo games and DK64. I always thought that generation of consoles all three had their areas and genres of expertise. More than any other generation it depends on what genre of game you like which system is best.

Nintendo 64 has the big 3d worlds with platformer and adventure games.

Saturn had the shmups and fighting games.

PSX had RPGs and was second best at all the above.

But N64 and Saturn had great rail shooters and PSX not so much. Saturn had the 2nd best RPGs.

For racing Saturn had arcade, PSX had simulation and N64 had kart/futuristic.

N64 had the best FPS games (I’m sure people will disagree but its true). Then honestly Powerslave makes a case for Saturn being 2nd place in that category.

All three systems had worse 2d platformers than previous generations but PSX was by far the best.

PC FPS were simplistic technology first things. They'd figure out how to make their pseudo-3D engine run at decent speed, stick a gun on the camera, pepper the levels with enemies that do nothing but chase you down and attack on cooldown and then they'd run out of ideas. Goldeneye had every level with its own set pieces, missions and enemies with many states in the state machine so they acted more organically. And the multiplayer was couch co-op chaos as opposed to the hyper focussed competitive structure to Quake.
Both kinds of games have their place, but I always felt that Goldeneye/PD were solid entertainment that didn't overstay their welcome where Doom, Duke, Quake, and especially Wolf & Triad were tedious. Once you have the full weapon loadout you've literally seen everything the game has to offer. Now it's just window dressing for 20 more levels of key finding, switch pulling action.
Marathon tried to inject more game design into the FPS and it sort of succeeded but the base FPS part was not as refined so it's tough to recommend.

It has no hardware support for any sort of 2d effects and no one was paying the insane development costs to make a 2d game for it. Not sure why you'd say "even 2d". When looking at the actual games with no reference one would think that the SNES was a more powerful 2d system.
Meanwhile the 3d games usually ran like shit because they were doing rather ambitious things with it. Very large areas with relatively high polygon counts. Probably not the best choice in hindsight, Playstation games that consist of like two 3d characters on screen against a 2d background look better and run better, but people appreciated it at the time.

I honestly don't like how ps1 games look outside of a few games like the Crash trilogy or Ape Escape, I always disliked the wobbly, pixelated textures and the aliased polygons.
Whenever I play PS1 games I always use the enhancements that fix those issues.

Even Nintendo used 2D, but yeah ot used textures on a flat polygon to create sprites:
The N64 could be a 2D power house if needed , On Mario Kart 64 each racer features thousands of different textures , this game could never run in optical media technology, it would be impossible to stream from the disc so much assets in real time!

I personally feel as if that's the best part of the ps1. I even went out and found a launch US 1995 console because those have the earlier gpu's and vram which make the graphics even more dated.

>The N64 could be a 2D power house if needed

I highly doubt this. Take Mortal Kombat Trilogy. While yes, home ports of these games were often fairly low effort, this very demanding 2d game looks pretty bad on N64, with small sprites, ugly post processing, and missing content.
And Mortal Kombat Trilogy is far from the peak of 2d gaming. I can't imagine say, the Dungeons and Dragons games, which run on the Saturn albeit with nasty load times, working on N64. Maybe it could, but there's nothing on the platform that gives any indication of this.
As I did mention in the other post though, no one really tried to push 2d on the N64 so we don't really know.

I could be wrong, but I believe that was midway choosing to use the smallest cartridge available to save money.

>> No.9990243

>>9990180
MK Trilogy is a bad example because it used a small cartridge and was one of Midway's early n64 games along cruis'n usa which weren't stellar ports honestly.
Wonder Project J2 and Rakuga Kids show that the system is capable of doing good 2D (I'll even say Yoshi's Story is also a good looking game even if someone doesn't like its aesthetics) but most 2D games of that time were made by japanese developers who weren't interested on the N64.

F-Zero X: N64 exclusive, never been ported.
Zelda OoT: Has one port that runs 10 fps faster, but looks like shit in comparison. Also said port is on a fucking handheld.
Ogre Battle 64: N64 exclusive, never been ported.
Star Fox 64: N64 exclusive as far as I know.
I don't exactly play N64 often and don't generally keep it hooked up, but I'm glad I have one and if I want to play one of those games, I get out the 64.

These are the games I owned on N64 when it was my main console from 1997-2001 (ages 9 to 13). I've only owned more games for PS3.

Was shocked years later to discover people consider it a failure, because at my elementary school N64 was the big thing everyone was cool for having. I was also subscribed to Nintendo Power and it was my only source of gaming information besides schoolyard chatter, so I got the impression it was the best thing ever

I geniunely didn't know the N64 was hated or had "no games" until I got access to the internet, same with some of its games that I like (DK64, Yoshi Story, Castlevania 64, etc..) that apparently are the devil itself.

well gee whiz ya fuckin moron maybe if you actually had like a full fledged high production value mainline pokemon game on your flagship consoles right off the bat instead of waiting 4 fucking generations to do it and only giving us Pokemon Stadium and whatever the fuck Colosseum and XD were supposed to be maybe people would have actually bought the Gamecube and the N64and the PiiU.

It's an edgy internet revisionist opinion made by "muh NES and SNES were the only REEAAAALLLL retro Nintendo consoles" reddit soiboys. Every kid I knew in the mid to late 90s either had an N64 or wanted one badly, even if they had another 5th gen console. I got my N64 a couple months after they first came out in 1996, and I don't think I had one friend who didn't want their own after coming over to my house to play it. It's a phenomenal console and certainly my favorite Nintendo console.

Why was the N64 so much more successful in North America compared to Japan/EU?

>> No.9995602

>>9995561
Bigger and better marketing, europe was never a nintendo place and the ps1 completely dominated there (plus from what I've see a lot of PAL 64 titles used to come often way late there, had limited production or didn't got a release).
Library focused on what was popular in USA at the time (3D platformers, wrestling, fps, multiplayer games, etc..)
Lack of genres that Japan likes (arcade games and jrpgs), and 3d platformers & FPS were barely relevant there.

Me and my GF want to get an N64 (she had one as a kid and I always liked the way a lot of the games look) but I hear there's no way of connecting it to modern TVs without it looking a bit shit; it's not like some consoles where modern converter cables make it look 10 times better, unless you do risky mods on the system it's gonna look crusty.
