There must be a Karnov thread, it's been over a month. The arcade version must be discussed. Enemies must be named. Japanese printed material must be located.

I used to dream about the enemies from this game, nightmarish landscapes populated by these mummies and chicken men. Who else is with me? I have yet to locate an arcade version but you die in one hit. Crazy ruthless.

Any Karnov discussion will do. My brother beat it, I did not. The last thread there was a lot of negativity about some sort of YouTube video that made Karnov recently popular. Is there in fact a hot new Karnov video?

>> No.996661

Does anyone know anything about Karnov's other Data East appearances? He had his own Karnov's Revenge fighting game, and was a boss in whatever SNK-run fighter that was a sequel to. Also of course, the fire-breathing madman boss who helped to kidnap President Ronnie in Bad Dudes. Were there any others?

>> No.996664

There was no shield power-up in the arcade version, it was some sort of "trolley"(?) that mowed over all the enemies instead.

ENEMIES

Lion Keeper

Appears with a lion who shoots out from its mouth. If you kill the lion, the
Keeper will attack you by throwing knives.

Chiken Bone
Lies in wait for Karnov at the top of a tree, then swoops down upon him
suddenly.

Snake Woman
This strange creature will attack with increasing strength when Karnov fights
back.

Rock Man
Karnov will need to power-up with Options to defeat this enemy, which
threatens him with large boulders.

Gidora
Karnov will need a Shield to defend himself against this two-handed monster,
which shoots out from both of its mouths.

They would boulder you up. The weirdest enemies were the ones that only showed up if you lingered or strayed. Like the Arab swordsmen with minuteman hats or the floating Dhalsim Yoda dudes.

I've never played this, but I've read about it. I'll rectify that this weekend. My only familiarity with him is his Academy award winning-turn as a gametoken eating, cheap as hell boss in Bad Dudes. If you didn't have the nunchucks, you were in for a world of hurt.

>> No.997165

Sometimes I go through level 2 of Bad Dudes without dying, sometimes I crap out on the first screen. I'm worse at Karnov for arcade, though.

Looked up Karnov 1CC on YouTube expecting to see a Tool-Assisted master shred the game. He did, but still died several times. Made me respect the awesome power of Karnov even more.

Also, arcade = Namco; console = Data East. How did Karnov become a Data East character?

>> No.997184

I always thought he was Data East's mascot character. Bad Dudes is a Data East (arcade and console) IP.

I skimmed over a wiki article and some stuff at the Arcade Flyer Archive. Data East handled their own arcade release and the NES port; Namco published the Famicom (Japan) console port.

He more or less is Data Easts's mascot. When someone says "Data East", the first characters that come into most peoples' minds are Karnov, Chelnov, and Makoto Mizuguchi form Fighter's History.

The arcade also had the cool map, the Famicom version might have also. This was a big part of the game that I had to get from the manual, the crazy Black Sea / Caspian Sea / Babylon / Turkey sort of deal from the setting. It was unique and good though.

What's the deal with Chelnov? I saw that Arino challenged that game and that it's also Data East. Is that Karnov's futuristic cyborg brother?

Data East claimed that Chelnov was related to Karnov, but that was really just ass-covering since he was obviously named after Chernobyl. Anyway, Chelnov is another game that had its story completely rewritten. The original arcade game was about a coal miner who was trapped in an exploding nuclear plant and gained superpowers from the radiation. Considering that the Chernbyl disaster was still recent at that time and the game's name was obviously in reference to it, it caused some controversy. So when it was later ported to the Genesis the story was rewritten to be about a guy using a powered suit invented by his scientist father.

>> No.997790

>>997783
Is there a place to look at documentation that came with arcade games? Or do these stories come from the in-game cutscenes and promotional flyers? Going to look up some tech specs on Karnov and Chelnov arcade versions.

Possible that Chelnov was Karnov from the "Bad Ending", made mortal and doomed to walk the earth forever as a humble laborer?

>> No.997797

The first thing I notice is that the code for both Karnov and Chelnov comes from karnov.c, which I take to be the Karnov engine in itself.

Both run at 256 × 240, but at a perfect 60.000 Hz making them good for vsync-free (low lag) emulation.

Are the enemies in Chelnov as weird as Karnov? I remember the big arms/hands but not much else from the Chief. Karnov looks like it has way bigger sprites...was "Atomic Runner" faster?

>> No.997806

>>997790
In Chelnov's case, it's the in-game cutscenes. The game starts out with a comic-style slideshow describing the plot I mentioned in the last post, along with some heroic-sounding music.

>> No.998441

It's a forgone conclusion, no translation of Karnov will be forthcoming. We were defeated by the powerful Vice: Project Doom. There may be some time left, it's just discouraging to know that the game won't be translated by the team if it doesn't win this one arbitrary vote.

Just be aware, you've marked yourselves. The retro community is out there. Anyone who is into Vice: Project Doom best watch your back.

>> No.998501

A lot of Data East's games, including the NES port of Karnov, were ported by a company called "Sakata SAS". Who were these people, were they a sister company to Data East, considering they did ports for other Data East games, whether they were DECO IPs or games they published.

That's another thing. Back then, no one knew the people behind the games, especially the programmers. Nowadays, the people who just come up with the ideas, like Kojima or Sakurai, are treated like celebrities, despite doing very little programming themselves. What's with this celebrity mentality?

It's probably half nostalgia, but I think the graphics generally look nicer on the NES than the arcade version. The arcade game uses more colors than the 3-color sprites on the NES, but somehow I think the artist was less talented. It reminds me of certain computer games in the '90s that were pretty, but kind of badly drawn.

Big exception: That thing on the left. Good god, what a muddled Rorschach of pixels.
