Mike Matei is not funny, nor is he cool. He probably shouldn't be making videos on his own.

But I enjoy his presence when it's just him and James playing through a game.

Mike reminds me of some of the guys I used to know. He's that guy that didn't have a girlfriend, hardly ever missed the group hangout times, and didn't mind playing games which weren't really his thing.

And guys like him are usually pretty good at games. By the time I was 15 or 16 a lot of my game playing pals were too busy chasing girls, fapping to anime, playing MMOs, or becoming some manner of scene faggot, but my own Mike Ma-gay was up for another round of KOF or trying to beat Doom Troopers.

Also, I'd put $100 on the dude being home-schooled.

I really enjoy him in a few AVGN episodes. Especially batman, his role as the Joker left me in stitches.

His game glitches show was nice, but just a bland video in an over saturated region of YouTube. He rides on James' coat tails for it. Never really cared for James and Mike play.

The final boss videos he put up were fun to guess at.

All in all, he's alright. Nothing special but not overly obnoxious. I like OPs view as that one friend who was down for a night of video games

I met Mike and James when they swung by Troma's office to shoot a scene with Lloyd Kaufman for the AVGN movie. Both of them were friendly, professional, and all around class acts.

I think it's just that he's always kind of hated the AVGN character a bit and he's glad he has an excuse to not do it. Heck I think that all Internet celebrities kind of start hating their Internet personalities after a while. The Nostalgia Critic sure did, he even tried to retire the character and got pecker-slapped when he tried to start a new show. Its just that with the more recent AVGN videos he seems like he really doesn't give even half of a fuck.

While we're discussing Internet celebs, what do you guys think of Spoony? I really used to like him back in the day, but recently he's just so goddamn negative about everything that it's kind of annoying to watch him. I know that getting angry at video games is like his thing, but it's just frustrating when every single video boils down to "I hate this game". The last video I watched was a review of Bioshock, in which he complained endlessly about the fact that the vita chambers make the game too easy. Even though you can turn that off in the options. Christ. Or his FFX review, where he mentions that while he hates the story the combat system is really good. Yeah, like the story in the old Nintendo final fantasies was that much better.

Well the official reason is that while James was really busy with the movie several months back eh had Mike do videos because partnered YouTube accounts are required to put up at least one video per month to remain partnered.

That makes a whole lot of sense. I still think that the movie couldn't have possibly taken that much of the AVGN's time, and I pretty much stand by the opinion that the AVGN was moving Mike up to take his place. James has said in an interview that he didn't expect the AVGN to get as big as it did, and frankly after about twenty of so episodes I think that the AVGN schtick ran out of steam pretty fast. That and the fact that James is posting a lot more of himself and telling people that he doesn't think or act like the AVGN in real life gives me a real impression that he just doesn't enjoy doing that stuff anymore.

Mike just annoys me because I always get the impression that he's doing this all to be Internet famous. I don't really think that he ever sounds actually passionate or excited about anything he's talking about. Recently AVGN is kinda boring, but in those early episodes I at least felt like he cared about what he was discussing.

I'm not surprised you don't know Spoony. He's only mildy e-famous from a multi-part video he did back in the day bashing FF8. He did some Ultima retrospective videos that were pretty good, and his Let's Play of Phantasmagoria 2 was pretty damn funny. But most of his stuff lately is spotty, and in some of his videos he has some stupid fucking metaplot going on.

The guy just has no business being on camera, he's just awful at it. I think it's all the "Um"'s and "Eh"'s, it's like he's going over the script in his head or something and it's really unappealing. I'd say he should get some practice but he's been doing this for a while and he's not got any better.

I met Mike and James at this year's SGC. They were both pretty cool dudes. Both really down to Earth. Saw them in the bar afterwards just chilling and talking to Spoony and some other dude.

I don't understand a lot of the hate he gets. He's damn good at games and I enjoy a lot of his videos he does. He's a good addition in my opinion.

I also like his drawings.
