is it worth playing? I loved EB and liked Mother3 a lot

all i known is that mac demarco kisses men and likes earthbound so it's probably really fucking gay

It's the best in the series, but if you're a zoomer who's never played a Famicom RPG you'll probably be filtered and come crying.

make sure to play the Earthbound Beginnings version.

It's a really good dragon quest clone. I would recommend it to anyone with an nes. But yeah solid title. Lots to explore, it's like the bbc of the mother series the map is so big. It's kind of empty though. It's an 8 but rpg, if you like those then it's a no brainer really. Good music, lots of soul

I like it better than 2 and 3, you should absolutely play it. Do not listen to this anon >>9951893, just play the game as it was released a few years back (basically just the unaltered US "prototype")

I definitely value a game's released difficulty level, but I also see how people who are more story-oriented RPG players would enjoy the easy patch for Mother 1. It just feels smoother, allows you to take in the games atmosphere a bit more without as much frustration. DESU, jrpgs got a lot better later on at valuing your time spent with them, and either making the game easier or giving you a lot more stuff to do to compensate for the high difficulty, I am personally very glad that leveling up and just the general pacing of jrpgs became easier as the genre went on.

youre gonna have a very bad time if you dont play on emulator with the romhack. this game is the epitome of 80s jrpg grind, especially at the beginning. i would also recommend putting in game genie codes to be able to turn off the encounters entirely at your leisure, because some parts of the map are enormous for no reason, with no treasure or anything of interest in them.

It's a bit grindy but its not too bad. I wouldn't use the easy ring personally.
The version on NSO is fine. Starmen.net has a really comprehensive guide if you get stuck. Personally it's my favorite of the three mother games.

my personal favorite in the series, it has a lot of charm and the characters have more personality to them than they did in 2. the game isn't too bad without the easy ring if you're used to old rpgs, but the easy ring isn't a bad choice if you just want to wander the map and not worry about dying too much. depending on what version you play you might want to look at the starmen guides, there are a few dungeons that are ridiculous to navigate without a map (i think in earthbound beginnings there are less complicated versions of these dungeons which are easy to get through without a guide)

This was most direct to Tomato, not the translation itself.
IIRC Tomato admitted on twitter or some new interview that he made some regrets on keeping around all the "problematic" script despite assuring everything is accurately translated in Mother 3. He also expressed to do a new version of the original translation one day.

I recommend it. As other said, it is very grindy, and the combat rather simple, so it’s def a game you’ll want to be doing something else while playing (enter your commands for the turn or turn on auto, then just play a phone game or read a book while you wait for your next turn). But it’s also very charming and has a lot of little moments and quirky details I love. It’s a very wholesome feeling game.

If you play it, I recommend listening to the Mother vocal album a bit between play sessions. It’s nice knowing the words to all the songs playing in the game. Also, at the beginning, once you get Pippi in your party, don’t take her home until you’ve fully explored everywhere else. She’s a powerhouse once she gains a few levels, and wandering around figuring out where to go with just Ninten is a bit of a chore.

It's atrocious. I've never heard people bring up legitimate arguments to defend it, I mean the second post of this thread had "zoomer" and "filtered" in it, as if there aren't numerous far better Famicom RPGs. Pretty sad really.
Only the setting and music are good, there isn't even any feeling of being on a cool adventure unless you're larping at single digit age. 90% of the game is grinding and item management, the characters and story are a fuckload of nothing, the overworld is shit and empty, the dungeons are shocking and the final area of the game was not even playtested. If you want pure RPG gameplay play DQ3 or 4 instead.

Yes, everything about the gamelay is basically Dragon Quest 2 but on steroids. Everything from the main cast having similar roles and similar spell usage, to the non-linear world with treasure hunt "find X number of key items, all found in different ways (and not just a glorified symbol for beating a boss in each dungeon like in Zelda)"
So him claiming it isn't "pure RPG gameplay like DQ3 and 4" is really fucking weird.

But then again people get filtered by DQ2 so it makes sense they'd get even more filtered by "DQ2 on steroids".

>> No.9955034

>>9951820
I played it on NSO and it's a great game for its time. The NES is not the place you go for great RPGs (it has good ones but nothing compared to the SNES/PS1). The key word here is "for its time" the story is pretty cool but also really simple and you need to talk to NPCs to get a better picture of what's going on and where to go next, fights can get pretty hard especially at the beginning of the game, and the writing is very similar to EB, if not a bit more cynical in my opinion.
If you like EB and Mother 3 I say give Mother a chance, you can play the NES original or the GBA port that includes a patch to make the game easier.

Personally I've had more fun playing Famicom RPGs than SNES/PS1 ones

>> No.9956235

Come to think of it, Mother's design is so derivative of DQ2, in fact I'd wager that it was designed around the idea that the entire playerbase would have already played DQ2 first and wanted more (which at the time was true), that now I know what to answer to all the people asking if they should play it.
Tell them to play to DQ2 first. And if you don't like DQ2's gameplay, you will absolutely NOT like Mother's gameplay. And if your first thought to that comment is
>who cares about gameplay it's a JRPG
then you shouldn't be playing 8-bit RPGs period

>>9954487
This is nothing compared to some other jRPGs of the time and it's the only dungeon in the game that asks of the player to draw a map. Again if this isn't your thing, you shouldn't be playing 8-bit RPG.

Now let's take a look at another classic RPG that came out not that long before Mother
You have this dungeon
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/nes/578487-minelvaton-saga-ragon-no-fukkatsu/map/11419-gulas-temple-map

To leads to this dungeon
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/nes/578487-minelvaton-saga-ragon-no-fukkatsu/map/11415-rabant-castle-map

Shit starts to get real here, but then within that above dungeon, you find an entrance to ANOTHER dungeon

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/nes/578487-minelvaton-saga-ragon-no-fukkatsu/map/11416-gorgons-maze-map

So you have 3 dungeons connected to each other that get increasingly more mazey and finding the exit (different from the entrance) in that 3rd one is mandatory to progress to the next area

Honestly if you just want to experience the plot and the world of the game, the difficulty hacks are alright. The game isn't even that difficult normally, with the exception of mt itoi where I mostly just skipped battles until I reached the top. Worked fine and with very little grinding
