it's the zelda 2 of metroid. the game is really good, but the people focus on the differences like a bad thing.
that being said, the game progession is welded more tightly together than samus' cloaca, and the devs managed to contain the player to exactly where they wanted them to be, with absolutely zero sequence breaking as far as i am aware.

>> No.9949260

The game's good, but the trends it started for all subsequent 2D Metroids are lame.
>Restricted walljumps
>Locking the player into areas instead of having more """realistic""" setpieces where if you're clever you can find an alternative exit (Super Metroid)
>Having an NPC literally instruct Samus where to go
>Removing that sense of isolation when it feels more like you're being ordered than an explorer
etc

My only complaint about this game is literally the computer telling you were to go, otherwise he would block you to explore the game for yourself, like a typical, classical Metroid. That's dumbing down the series and casual tier, literally catering to babies and YouTubers/Streamers in terms of difficulty.

That being said, everything else about the game is amazing. Not my favorite Metroid, but a game i really enjoyed, not to mention.... THAT. FUCKING. SONG.

I kind of remember Samus talking with someone else but most of my memories of this game are cool Metroid action and some really awesome and challenging boss fights.
If people complain about stuff it's probably nitpicks and trying hard to fit in.

Anon, Fusion is constantly listed on Best GBA Games lists and praised every time it's posted here, if you wanted to make a Fusion thread you can do it without being a fucking spaz.

>> No.9949764

the problem i had with fusion is not its linearity explicitly. fusion has these moments in its level design where it feels very much like you cant progress further, but you obviously need to because you literally cant go anywhere else. so you need to do weird shit like bomb a tile on the ground for a platform to raise, or shoot at ceiling blocks to make them disintegrate. its able to get away with weird unintuitive shit like this because, otherwise, you would think you're not supposed to go that way and try your luck elsewhere. its not nearly as intuitive as it is in super metroid (which has similar moments but has a clever way of demonstrating that you are indeed intended to be there with save station placement and not being able to go back the way you came.

in that sense the linearity is really a necessary byproduct of its level design which isn't as smart as it was in super. otherwise exploring that space station would have a lot of dead-ends and even when you think you would be on wrong path you actually would be because you missed some dumb shit.

my only real complaints with the game are more shortcomings. the SA-X is underused for how much of it is a focus in story material, the omega metroid is a meh final confrontation, and the game doesn't really do anything that interesting with the fusion concept besides as a way to absorb boss abilities.

one specific issue I have with the game is that as result of streamlining super missiles to be a passive upgrade the game lacks a second order upgrade to collect and keep you interested late game. extra powerbombs have always basically just been a utility QOL feature and there's only a handful of E tanks that aren't placed as mandatory unavoidable upgrades.

>> No.9949946

>>9949897
ice beam + 5 missiles is canonically the way to kill metroids. it's what makes the SA-X deadly (if you forgive its dogshit programming) because you are weak against it.
there is no reason to have it until the end game.
moreover, without a way to switch it off, every enemy now takes 2 hits instead of 1. i turn it off in Super unless i need it to climb a shaft or i need to hit a boss extra hard. the GBA games don't allow you to disable powerups, so this is the way to make it not annoying.
also, you get the ice missiles for some time anyway.

I dont even like the criticism about Adam telling you where to go because every fucking time he does you are blocked in some way and you gota explore to find an alternate route. i watch oats, zeni, etc though, even if i'm not any good myself i love super metroid's intricacies enough that i'm way down that rabbit hole

still learning little tricks like alcatraz escape and getting kraid quick kill consistently, there's just so much technicality to super that it never gets old

The controls in super are very good because they allow complete freedom to do whatever while aiming at any angle. The same can't be said of any other metroid game. As a result the controls are harder to master but once you do, super metroid gives the most freedom for precise movement. People saying super metroid has "bad" controls are wrong and simply don't want to spend any effort at getting good at it.

it misses the claustophobia of the GB version but improves it in all other ways
don't play the official nintendo remake (samus returns) until you've hit a content drought, it has a large number of aspects that make it very different from other metroid games, think of it as a alternate universe metroid that doesn't have the same fantasy

I already love the game, but without the navigation room lockouts and longass briefings it would be even better. The fusion of story and gameplay elements is done really well and it has loads of cool original designs (suits, enemies, bosses).
After that, Zero Mission was actually disappointing because so much stuff is recycled directly from Super and the original content is kinda shitty (big worm, big bee, coomer suit sneaking section).

>>9950891
AM2R is pretty solid as a whole. I don't like the M2 style of "search & destroy until next area opens" (not to mention all the spiderballing) but the final boss fight is really fucking good, that alone makes it worth playing through.

I thought Fusion improved on the controls by having the one shoulder button for aiming and using the other for missiles. super's issues are partly due to the snes controller not having a second row of shoulder buttons, the awkwardness of all 3 run jump attack instead of just 2 in one diagonal would be solved by that. the way weapon selection works could have been made much more efficient with combination buttons instead of having to cycle through the entire list.
